Big chocolate, coffee and licorice nose that permeates the room. Sweet aroma, more like milk chocolate on closer inspection. Full, creamy body and fine carbonation. Tons of chewy malt and a cascade of flavor: Raisins, oatmeal, coffee, toasted nuts, brown sugar. Dark chocolate finish. This beer is pretty roasty for a Baltic, but I’m completely willing to overlook that because everything else about it is dialed in to why I like this style. jmikolich (405), Athens, Ohio, USA

Very Very nice though so far. CheersMate1 (804), Atlanta, Georgia, USA

Tried this last night; this was the best porter I have ever had! Holy crap, poured like a stout. Nice chocolate head that looks amazing. Very creamy and smooth palate. Has a lovely palate. Ah....so creamy it is great. The beer has a very pugent ash/roast/stout aroma. This beer is just insane. Can’t belive Smuttynose is offering this one. Not so much coffee, but a lot of ash and roast flavor(s). Can’t believe this porter, but very good. Nice smooth ash/stout/roast flavor that just lingers on the tongue. The alcohol is hidden well. The beer is just so smooth it is insane. Overall, if you have a chance to get this porter do not be a fool and NOT purchase it!. This beer has the best roast/ash aroma that I have ever had. Very much an amazing beer. Cheers everyone! malrubius (1002), Valley Stream, New York, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jul 19, 2009 On tap at Novare Res. Dark brown with dense head. Mocha ice cream aroma. Robust roasted coffee chocolate with minimal lager grassiness and nice roasted finish. NIce body and mouthfeel. Probably my favorite baltic porter, as I’m not much of a fan of the style. hunter112 (11), Nanuet, New York, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 8, 2008 Strong head, poured as dark as I would expect. A little lacking in the nose, but the taste made up for that. Coffee predominates, some chocolate. A very smooth porter, the finish is quite satisfying. One of the very best I’ve had from Smutty. | 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jan 17, 2009 650ml bomber at Tupalev’s, courtesy of matt7215, huge thanks to Matt! I was really looking forward to this one and was not let down. Pours a deep dark brown, almost clear at the bottom of the glass. Aroma: leather, anise, peat moss, and general malty awesomeness. Flavour: All of the above with a touch of pen ink (which I guess is obligatory in all American stouts and porters?) but also no soy sauce! Yeah! Toffee, and a touch of raisin. A sublte grainy hint is a very nice touch. More sweet than bitter, as one would expect from the style. Very much an American interpretation of a European classic, very well done. I really love this style. Very smooth for what it is which can only be attributed to the fact that it’s a lager. So rich and satisfying! Changed (167), Ithaca, New York, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 11, 2009 22oz bomber. Pours black with a small tan head that uniquely dissipates almost instantly. No lacing on the English pint glass. Aroma isn’t very strong- roasted malt and some chocolate. Flavor was oddly more enjoyable on the first sip compared to the last. Very straight forward flavor: chocolate, coffee, slight vanilla. Difference between this and every other porter I’ve had is the ABV. At 8.7%, this may be my favorite porter... Smuttynose makes another damn good beer... Pastor (509), Maine, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Oct 26, 2009 Had this the 09 on tap and a 08 bottle yesterday. I went with the dark brews yesterday
The brew throws a wonderful tan head that easily can be brought back to life at anytime. A nice film of lace stays with this brew the whole time. The body of the brew was black with the 08 showing a nice caramel colored highlight when held to the light.
The differences between the two years are quite interesting. The 08 was huge in the oak and bourbon flavors and smell. Where the 09 bottle had a lot more dark fruits and other spice aroma and flavors going on.
Mouthfeel on both was medium to full with great carbonation.
Drinkability was awesome I easily drank a couple glasses. Looking at the two years side by side, I will say I liked this years a little more than last
