The aroma is unmistakable, roasted grains, coffee, cocoa, chocolates, even a wisp of smoke. The flavor is spot on, with the roasted malt dominating throughout, yielding slightly to allow a slight hoppy bitterness to bring this dance to a close. tgncc (845), Bellmore, New York, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Sep 13, 2009 Nice aroma of chocolate, roasted coffee, raisin, malty. The appearance is an attractive deep brown/black, tan head. The flavor is chocolate, fruit, raisin, coffee, cream, light roastyness. The finish is sweet, with a bitter chocolate, and roasted coffee bittering, and a relatively small hop component, which takes a minute to surface. Nice thick, creamy mouthfeel. Excellent representation of a great style not so easy to find. eaglefan538 (2403), Wilmington, Delaware, USA

Very nicely done brew, a tad thin and milk-chocolatey on the flavor / mouthfeel, the only features that kept this from soaring on the second go-around. Yum! Bottle SL. Pour was dark brown almost black. The aroma was firm roast, strong chocolate, oats and other grains. The flavor followed the aroma, lots of robust porter notes, some faint bubblegum in the background, not sure I get all the Baltic porter notes. Mouthfeel was moderate for the style, strong roasted presence, dried up hops in the finish. Decent shot by Smutty, but not my fav of theirs. unclemattie (2441), Georgia, USA

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Nov 20, 2009 22 oz. bottle courtesy of j12601. I have been wanting to try this for some time as it is one of my favorite styles. This pours very dark brown in color with a medium tan head. The aroma is deep roasted malts, rich chocolate, black coffee notes, and dark fruits. The flavor is more heavily roasted malt goodness, rich chocolate, dark fruits (raisins), molassess all working together nicely. At times, the alcohol makes itself known but not in a distracting way. There is a hint of acidity that adds a little bite. Medium full bodied with a smooth texture that makes for a nice beer to have with the cooler temps we have tonight. This lived up to my expectations and am happy I have a couple more to enjoy. mcox90 (654), Wilton, USA

Pours a nice black color with ruby highlights and a 1/2" brown head. Nose is mild coffee, grains , dark fruits, & alcohol. Mouthfeel is heavy & oily. Taste is same as nose with light soy notes . There is a slight bitterness for balance. Very good effort from Smutty. Beerlando (2353), Orlando, Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Apr 4, 2008 Courtesy dchmela....thanks Dave! Pours a deep, dark chocolate brown with a small, foamy, light brown head. A smattering of spotty lacing speckles the glass. This is a true Baltic, as the massively malty nose clearly indicates. Big notes of bittersweet chocolate, dark caramel, cocoa nibs, and roasted coffee mean serious business. A mildly earthy hop character comes through a little, but make no mistake, this one is malt dominant. The flavor is again huge and intensely roasted, with rich, smooth, chocolaty and caramelized malts. Medium-full bodied and silky smooth, this one goes down easy and finishes with lingering roast. This is right up there with the best that this style has to offer. Fantastic.
