DougShoemaker (2855), Toronto, Canada Aug 26, 2007 Big hops aroma, some malt as well, tequila sunrise colour, teeny beige head. Hops are front and centre here, with some decent malt, caramel and almond. Medium bodied, bitter, pleasant mouthfeel. Pretty good. TomDecapolis (3127), Skippack, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 6, 2007 Pours a translucent copper with a smaller creamy/bubbly off white head. Aroma of dark fruits, toffee, caramel, butterscotch and some hints of vanilla. Flavor of dark fruits, butterscotch, vanilla, nuts, light hop...not sure of the year for this bottle...my guess is a 2006 since it has seemed to mellow a bit. pnista (1008), Bloomington, Indiana, USA Jul 29, 2007 2006 bottle. Perhaps a bit young, but I don’t know what will change... Standard rich copper barleywine look with a very this white head. Alcoholic bootleather. A bit of tannic astringency. Some touch of floral hops and a bit of fruit. Not so sweet as this style usually is. Low carbonation, with out a ton of substane in terms of viscosity. Even perhaps a bit watery. Alcohol is strong over a very tannic toasty malt. A bit fruity and not too sweet. This beer needs a bit more malt to really open up. anders37 (4516), Malmö, Sweden Jul 13, 2007 Bottle from 2004 @ Akkurat, Stockholm. Pours a slightly hazy orange color with an off-white head. Malty chocolate aroma with some hoppy hints. Sweet malty warming chocolate and caramel flavor with some hoppy hints. Sweet malty warming milk-chocolate finish with some hoppy hints in the aftertaste. beermaniac (86), Pennsylvania, USA Jul 8, 2007 Aroma: Complex aroma of fruity ester, hop, alcohol and sherry notes, all very soft.Totally resembles my homebrewed Barleywine.
Appearance: Cloudy, low head retention, amber colored beer.
Flavor: Mirrors aroma, with some sweetness in the finish but not cloying, just enough hops to balances the huge maltiness of this beer.
Palate: For such a big beer, very smooth. Some alcohol warmth, but it adds to the beer positively rather than detracting. Big, chewy mouthfeel.
Overall: Very nice barleywine, would most likely develop more subtle complexities with age (mine was a 2006). Similar to my homebrew, but a little softer. drewbeerme (2224), Chicago, Illinois, USA Jun 15, 2007 22oz, 2006 vintage. pours dense glowing orange with white head. nose is odd like it’s slightly oxidized already, some toffee, brown sugar, very sweet smelling. flavor is very sweet and hot, cotton candy, very nutty, oranges, alcohol. carbonation is low. mouthfeel is a tad thin. they need to rework this recipe becuase their other big beers are quite nice. this not so much. boboski (1095), Alabama, USA May 9, 2007 Definitely thick. Deep, dark amber/orange body, totally translucent. Medium-sized, but quickly and fully diminishing cream colored head. Lacing resembles the outline of mountain ranges in a photograph. Aroma explodes with big bready and tangy caramel malts. Sour citric hops smell like unripened tree fruits. A stinging nose, with some softening from notes of banana and melon. Flavor is a departure from the whole of the aroma. Heavily toasted grains, fruit-topped poundcake, pineapple, melon and orange rind. Not much pleasure is found in the extreme burned tastes of the toasty and bitter profile. Despite this, it’s quite easy to sip. Finishes dry but with a some balance. Mouthfeel is well rounded anf moderately full. On the good side of average. mgumby10 (1844), Jupiter, Florida, USA May 6, 2007 Pours a radiant, reddish brown, with a medium, thin white head. Smells of hops, caramel, sweet malts, and a little bitter fruit. Grapefruit mostly. Taste is quite sharp, some nice rich caramel, slightly bitter, but in a good way. Traces of cinnamon, and some sweeter grapefruit citrus. Faily smooth and balanced pretty well. Good showing.
