I’ve had this before at various times and wasn’t overwhelmed, but ageing is clearly the right choice with this one. Fresh, its far too hoppy and hot, but a few years on it, and its drinking well. Strong notes of orange zest and caramel lead into vanilla bean and oak. The malt is starting to kick in, although its still a bit hot and hoppy. Excellent stuff, and stood up well beside an 03 Dogwood Excellent Adventure and an 01 Old Dominion. Thanks, Rob! jerc (3888), Toronto, Ontario, Canada
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 5, 2006 Brown body with a small white head. Big hoppy aroma suddenly becomes shy when I try to dig deeper. Nice bitterness with resiny thick almost astringent hops in the flavour. Decent underlying malt. A bit of a blunt instrument at times, but a lovable one at that. Medium palate (3+). Pretty solid and a nice capper before my mad dash to catch the train home. tupalev (2611), Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

Dark ruby brown, very frothy white head. Lovely malt and alcohol in aroma, some hints of smoke as well. Great taste - alcohol, sweet malt, rather spicy and a little bitter. Frothy mouthfeel. Not terribly complex, but simple either - this achieves a great balance and is a wonderful barleywine - I like these guys! Great label too. Slightly hazy orange-amber, smallish off-whtie head. Lovely aroma, orange juice malt, soft citrus malt, wood, more wood - nice. Soft, astringent, alcoholic long finishing mouthfeel - good God this is an excellent BW. hophead75 (1954), Boonton, New Jersey, USA

Aroma of alcohol, caramel malts, citrus, and traces of hops. Flavor is caramel, smooth, alcohol is present nearly masking any sweetness this beer has. Good body, good brew.
