I can’t wait to go surfing at the wall in NH mephisto (1144), Taiwan Mar 14, 2006 2006. cloudy copper with no head, it is lightly carbonated. sweet malt aroma with note of grapefruit. very bitter, it can use some aging. rich and sweet. Kinz (2179), Glen Allen, Virginia, USA Mar 8, 2006 I picked this bottle up back in 2004 I believe, sometime after sampling the oak aged version. I didn’t care for the oak, so couldn’t get motivated to open this up. Finally seeing that the oak version had been split off, I decided to pop open this thing. Unbelievably good beer. Medium orange amber, slight haze from the sediment, good head. Aroma was winey, woody, alcoholic, loaded with caramel, and bitter, anise laden hops. Flavor matched, wildly complex with additional notes of dark fruit, chocolate, pine, grapefruit, and toffee. Perfectly balanced, this was absolutely fantastic. A fantastic surprise. This thing should never touch oak. harmfuldrunk (288), New Jersey, USA Mar 7, 2006 tastes like an imerial ipa. good taste but dosnt taste like a barletwine at all. as a beer it is good, fruity accents to it, sweet to nose and to taste. very bitter. pretty nice but not really a barleywine taste walter (359), Staunton, Virginia, USA Mar 5, 2006 22oz bottle, 2006. Medium amber color with little head. Nose is a nice balance of hops, sweet caramel malt, and alcohol-- aromas of earthy hops, medium caramel malt, big alcohol burn lending a medicinal note, mild fruitiness, and initially some faint sourness, like rotting apples. Flavors of fruity hops, bitter hops, and sweet malt, fairly well balanced, though bold and spicy enough to be in-your-face. Medium body, with the hops a bit rough on the palate, which I adore, and the alcohol very present and warming. Long, hoppy-sweet finish. I really enjoyed this, another fine brew from Smuttynose. hiphops (280), caldwell, New Jersey, USA Mar 4, 2006 ISH DONT THINK SO!!
vey hoppy. too hoppy for a barey wine.
beautiful cloudy red color though.
once u get into this brew the hops subside almost. though when u swallow its hops again. with a strong nose of alcohol. ima put it away and try it in a couple years maybe it wont suck freekyp (900), Thomasville, North Carolina, USA Mar 3, 2006 Pouring a murky reddish brown, and topped with a small tan head, this brew has a resious hoppy aroma with strong brown sugary notes. Sweet and highly alchoholic, this brew finishes with a strong hop smack across the tongue. Over the top, this behemoth is a sipper, not a gulper.
