OldRaspy (292), Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA Feb 28, 2006 Pour was amber in color with a light brown head. Aroma was hoppy for a barleywine, I had pine and floral. I had noes of caramel and malts trying to come through the hops. Flavor was strong hops with a malt undertone. The hops seemed to take over this barleywine. GreenDragon (213), Richmond, Virginia, USA Feb 28, 2006 Updated: Mar 3, 2006Pours with a medium lemony ellow head that rapidly vanishes on a deep orange golden color. Strong hoppy aroma with lots of pine and floral hops. Undertones of fruit and malt. Strong hoppy taste with lots of malt underneath. Mild current taste on a strong alcoholic body. maniac (2628), Richmond, Virginia, USA Feb 28, 2006 Clear amber color with a medium light brown head. Aroma of hops with caramel notes. Flavor had hints of pine with a sweet caramel end. 2beerguys (299), North Shore, Massachusetts, USA Feb 27, 2006 The Barleywine is an ass-kicker. Weighing in at 10% ABV, you must tread lightly through the big 22oz bottle. There is a powerful aroma right off of the pour, of moderate hops with flower and pine notes. The pour is a medium amber color with an average, frothy light-brown head. Good lacing over a hazy body. Initial flavor is lightly sweet, moving to slightly bitter at the finish. Alcohol presence is abundant in the finish, with lively carbonation. This brew was bottle-conditioned in 2006. outerupt (133), Richmond, Virginia, USA Feb 22, 2006 Smells like a freshly smashed pumpkin. The colour is a deep amber red. Pours with a very thin, weak head. Mouthfeel is coarse and slightly oily with flavors of bitter baking chocolate, pommegranate juice, and an extreme hop bitterness on the finish. Alcohol is overt and a bit overwhelming giving the beer a hot feel that is not balanced with depth of malt or sugar. This is an ok barleywine but seems extremely disjointed. Pinnhead (93), New Jersey, USA Feb 14, 2006 pours a lovely caramel color, slightly opaque. nice mix of sweet and bitter but just a little oddly flavor for my taste and I really appreciate smuttynose products. Numenor (869), Richmond, Virginia, USA Feb 12, 2006 2003 Vintage -- Sweet aroma of fruits and some hops. Red brown body with a large head. Mollasses and fruits in the flavor. Grapes are noticeable. Very smooth ending. 11026 (1799), Alabama, USA Feb 12, 2006 2004 bottle opened 7 Jan ’06. Clear, deep reddish orange color with a pleasant sized, beige head that is quite dense. The head slowly fades to a ring leaving good lacing behind. Rich caramel aroma with a bit of oxidation mixing with alcohol. Medium to full bodied, gentle carbonation. Initially sweet with pleanty of residual sugars. Moderate to full alcohol and a suprising amount of IBU’s for a beer aged for a year or so. Good balance, nicely crafted BW.
