ryan (1774), Beltsville, Maryland, USA Oct 21, 2005 Pours amber with big fizzy off-white head, lasting. Some lacing. Aroma is pine and citrus hops with some caramel malt. Flavor starts with strong piney hops that last throughout. Caramel malt, spice, raisins all come through quite nicely. Fairly dry for a barley wine. Warming alcohol finish, very noticeable, but not harsh. Lively carbonation, full-body, long finish. beerinmarch (2781), Alabama, USA Sep 29, 2005 Pours a light amber/copper with a medium white head. Lighter bodied with a nice balanced sweetness to hop ratio. Not overly thick and sweet but easily drinkable with a mellowed alcohol taste. This bottle was aged a bit so some of its initial hotness has been burnt off leaving a very nice mellowed barleywine. BennyTicklez (621), USA Sep 2, 2005 Pours bright amber with a big tan head. Aroma is fruity, nutty, and full of alcohol. Taste is fruity as well, with a HUGE alcohol kick. This is a BIG beer. Somewhat sweet on the finish. Overall a good beer, just a little too much alcohol flavor mixed in. DavidP (1743), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA Aug 27, 2005 Bottle. Hazy red body under a creamy light head. A bit of marshmallow fluff accompanies the apricot-tinged caramel malt. Boozy flavor - dark fruity caramel sweetness with milk chocolate peeking around the corner. There’s some lemon rind/stemmy resinous hop bitterness along with alcohol in the finish. Medium mouthfeel with a sugary finish-feel. Smoky caramel malt as well as butter. A pretty average BW, not quite hoppy enough for my tastes. MIBRomeo (1962), Wisconsin, USA Aug 24, 2005 a mahogony colored pour w/ a thick off white head ok lacing. Smells of a large hop front w/ a nice sweet malt backbone hints of oranges and light spices. Palate is full and creamy fairly well carbonated. Flavor is a bitter grass hop a light carmel malt hints of alcohol not much else this may improve w/ some aging to mellow and blend it out better. Overall a decent beer but not great.
Thanks to Dave for sharing. 3daddict (139), Portland, Maine, USA Aug 5, 2005 Poured a wonderful bronze color that was semi-clear with a surprisingly large head which quickly receded to just a layer. Sweet malt aroma with a touch of spice and alcohol. Flavor followed suit but played out slightly rough with a harsher aftertaste. The flavor tended to smooth out towards the end of the glass and I couldn’t help wondering how well a little aging would fine tune this ale. MAP (1085), Lakewood, Ohio, USA Aug 4, 2005 Many more thanks to Dorwart for this suprise brew. Poured into a nice warm dark orange hazy with a thin head on top. Aroma of apricot, spice and heavy malt. Flavor is a tastey natural barley wine. Lots of malt that gets in my mouth and really sticks to the palate. Earth notes and some sweeter tones come out over time as the alcohol presence seeps in a bit further. All aroun good stuff, wish I could find this in Ohio during the snowey nights. FoolishMortal (965), San Diego, California, USA Aug 3, 2005 Murky orange light brown amber. Large foamy off white head. Soggy wood, alcohol and diacetyl in the aroma. Cloying sweetness combines with a very evident alcohol presence and a musky rotting plum flavor. Some hop bitterness and astringent mouthcoat appear in the finish, but it is too little too late. Mouthfeel is decently chewy.
