The aroma was piney with grapefruit and caramel. The taste had toffee, coffee and grass. There was also some burnt brown sugar. Nicely done. LilKem (1210), Marietta, Ohio, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 20, 2005 this was more like an IPA than a BW if you went on just flavors. lots of hops, pine, carmel, and kind of a bread-y kind of feel. Suttree (2708), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 20, 2005 Brownish red with a bit of chill haze. Nice malty aroma, with a lot of toffee and caramel. Cola-ish carbonation carries nicely melded flavors of pine, caramel slightly burnt toast (in a good way) to sticky finish. Jonathan3584 (323), Washington, Washington DC, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 13, 2005 Split with BlueDevil0206. Dark coppery brown pour. Pale head that is gone fairly quickly. Aroma is strong American hops, but not too citrussy -- much more piney. Strong sweet malt but not an incredibly heavy, thick, syrupy palate. Nice bitter finish that balanced it out. Good and rough without being incredibly over the top. BlueDevil0206 (122), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jun 10, 2005 Bomber. Pours a deep copper with slightly off-white head that doesn’t last (probably due to alcohol content). Aroma is piney and florally hopped with a bit of citrus. Nose also has a bit of caramel sweetness and malt. Flavor is big. Lots of green pungent hops....pine, citrus, flowers. Great hop profile. Malt flavor is of crystal malt sweetness and bready/biscuity goodness with some toffee. Mouthfeel was great, though not as syrupy as the sweetness would suggest which is a good thing. Everything was quite balanced for an American barleywine: hops, sweetness and malt. Very good, doesn’t rate like BIgfoot does, but still solid nonetheless. BBB63 (4228), La Porte, Indiana, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | May 29, 2005 Bottle via Hopdog, thx! Hazy refracted sunset orange hue with a lasting frothy light tan head and excellent lace on my snifter. The aroma has notes of leathery and non-aromatic pipe tobacco esters, piney and grassy hops, bready malts, hopleaf, and heather. The taste starts with a smack of sugar and big hop bitters. The midsection is a strong pine influence with citric undertones. The finish is more piney hops, white pepper, corriander and clove. Quite spicy and astringent for sure. The feel is quite biting and sharp, this one is a sipper and not for the meek has iit tastes stronger than the 10% ABV. Wow, I am fully impressed by this release, Mikey likey! Yet another enjoyable barleywine I’ve had over the past daze. Love those holiday weekends. TAR (2090), Boulder Co., Colorado, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | May 28, 2005 2004 release: Dark orange with tiny specks. Ivory-tinted lathery and rocky foam. Saliva-inducing honeysuckle, bready malt and earthy hop aroma. Lightly sappy and citrusy. Soothingly lush with soft carbonation. Impeccably conditioned. Sappy and clingy upfront, perfectly balanced by a brash sweep of earthy hops. Clean sprucey alcohol lends just enough dryness to balance the sweetness, but never detracts. Notable gullet-warmth, as well. Minute astringency, with a mere hint of dried leather and dates. Honeyed oranges lend more suppleness, while muffling the alcohol and softening the pungent lemon oils and grapefruit hop explosion. Deceptively plump and malty through and through, however, with a husky tease toward the latter half. Bitter orange peels are smoothed over by a silken malt bedding at the finish. Glory be to bottle-conditioning; at just over a year old, there’s not a single trace of oxidation. Should continue to age well. Arayaga2 (949), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 25, 2005 nice aroma with pineapple and slight alcohol apparent. Beautiful reddish brown color covered by a tan head. Obviously heavy alcohol and hops in taste. Not bad, but not great ($3.75/22oz)
