Nose is sweet and malty, like a concoction of toffee and rich fruity syrup.A little raw but sweet and good with the hops coming up to the front and not allowing the sweetness to overwhelm the flavor jefcon (998), Arlington, Virginia, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 28, 2005 Big and brawny. Copper in color, with a slim pale golden head and some racing. This is my first barley wine. Aromas aren’t as fruity, but there is some peach and esters present, with a malt, resin smell. Nice hop bite, bitter throughout, and very full as the palate goes. Bitter finish, but not too dry or sour. As I get used to it, the beer becomes smoother. I taste pine along with the hops. Well-balanced. I’d have another, but at another time. This is a bruiser at 10 percent alcohol. 5000 (2409), Hardened Liver, Washington, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Mar 25, 2005 Bottle pours a slightly hazy reddish copper, medium frothy sandy colored head, mild head retention, lively carbonation, with fairly attractive lacing.   Sweet malty nose, subtle hop presense.   Strong, almost biting hop bitterness at the forefront, quickly settles becoming a smooth semi-sweet malty elixir.   I can feel the heat of this one quite easily.   10% ABV is noticable, but doesn’t distract.   Body and mouthfeel seem fairly average, slightly viscous but also surprisingly fizzy.   Finishes with a bit more heat, and a bit more alcohol.   This also seems to be somewhat green, with a bit of a biting hop bitterness at the end.   Needs some time to smooth out me thinks.   Thanks goes out to Zathrus13 for the freebie!

| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Mar 22, 2005 Nice deep copper color with little head. BIG nose with lots of pepper, hops and very little malt. Malt backbone sems to be lacking, but the big hops and the alcohol are out in front. Lacking a little in complexity, some roasted malt and caramel flavors intermingled between the resiny hops. Not bad, but underdeveloped with too much alcohol up front. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 15, 2005 Rich attractive amber color, a bit cloudy. Head: Ka-Bloom! Way too carbonated, big bubbles with off-white color. Not much lacing. Good aroma and better flavor. Not that complex a flavor, but a pretty good barley wine, especially considering price. aspidites (1274), manteca, California, USA

Quite dry palate. I doubt it will develop beyond two years in the cellar. Sweet cherries in alcohol in finsih/aftertaste along with some hops. Interesting combo.
