22 oz. Bottle. This beer pours a ruby red with a small off white head. On the nose it has hints of caramel, toasted bread and citrus hops. Displays some flavors that I’d associate with old people fruit like dates, figs, etc. Flavor also displays some syrupy malt flavor that is balanced nicely by tart bittering hops. Mouthfeel is medium heavy with a mild but persistent carbonation. Finish is on the bitter side, with the alcohol beginning to show as the beer warms. Overall a very good beer and one of the better Smuttynose offerings.

22-oz bottle received via trade with beastiefan2k. Pours hazy tawny with an average, fizzy and frothy, off-white head, mostly lasting with good lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (bread, cookie), heavy hops (flowers, grass, citrus), heavy yeast (earth, dough) with notes of pineapple, peach, pear, and brown sugar. Medium bodied, sticky texture, average carbonation, and a bitter finish. Average duration, moderate sweetness, acidity, and bitterness.

Pours a dark amber with a medium sized tan head. This one was nice and hoppy with a good citrus kick. Sweet and malty with other fruits going around in this like grapes and strawberries. A bit of raisin in the finish. Thick mouth feel, no hint of the ABV. Very nice!

shared bomber on 4/6/08, rating from notes taken. pours a deep red with a bit of head... excellent hoppy and citrus filled aroma. Spicy and hoppy up front, smooth on the sides and a short bitter finish. Overall an excellent Barley Wine... so far my favorite beer from Smuttynose.

busted out at the BA wednesday night tasting. hazy rich copper color with a thick dense off white head which leads to a ring then film and leaves a decent lace pattern. very floral aroma jam packed with zesty fruit and citrus... sweetened grapefruit, orange skins, tangerines, whole pineapple, mango, caramel and a light spicy alcohol bite. light sweetness on the palate isn’t overbearing... yet. it’s still really hoppy and tart. all of the fruity aromas follow into the flavor along with notes of ashiness, earth and a spicy bite from the alcohol. the finish is dry and tart leading to some ashiness in the aftertaste. medium body without stickiness. the mouth feel is quite vibrant because of the prickly tart and dry hops...

Wow, drink a 22oz of this stuff and you’ll be feeling alright. While a very good tasting beer you will definitely notice the alcohol content. Pours a brown-reddish color with a small off-white head but a nice amount of lace. Aroma is quite hoppy and fruity. Strong hops, sweet candy malts and slightly fruity. I’d definitely get this again, nice strong flavors.

Pours a dark orangish-amber color with a 1/2 finger light beige head that settles into a modest collar. carbonation is fair, a few bubbles rise slowly to the underside of the head. Aroma is malty, sweet & fruity, hints of sweet grapes & strawberries. Flavor (after letting the beer warm for about 25 minutes) is a sweet maltiness, but it is somewhat hindered by a STRONG alcohol presence. Maybe sampling it at a colder temperature would smooth it out a bit. Mouthfeel is pleasantly full-bodied. Overall, a big beer that is a little TOO big of an alcohol punch. Tone down the booziness and you’ve got a much better beer here.

Tap @ BU Pub. Like many barley wines, this one is just gorgeous in the pour, a dark red color that you don’t see in other styles. The taste is quite good, the alcohol is well-flavored, and there is a strong malty sweetness balanced well by hops. A solid, if not great, barley wine.
