Bottle from Garrett (rayg1) Thanks. Pours out a dark red color - no head. Smell is grassy and fresh hopped, some sweetness. Taste is smooth and rich, bitter, and interesting. Bottle recommends some cheese - and with that, Garrett and I reached for the bleu and vermont cheddar, and this greatly enhanced the beer. Very good stuff, after the cheese factor. Probably a 3.5 before the cheese, 3.9 after. Good stuff from a never disappointing brewery. Original rating: 8 / 4 / 8 / 5 / 14 : 3.9 Updated: Cellar pick: 2003 bottle, 50 degrees. I thought I hadnt drank this before, but apparently I have. Oh well, I will still update my rating. Pours a niec reddish color with a thick yellowish head on it. Smell is great, full of some hop flavors and virtual no alcohol. Taste is sweet and smooth and actually pretty hoppy still. The boozy effect is long gone, leaving an incredible barley wine. People rating this fresh should have their head examined - this stuff is best after 5 years. Awesome beer.

2006 22 oz bomber. Pours an amber coppery color with a small white head. Aroma is full of citrusy hops with hints of sweet malts. Taste is very hoppy with citrus and piney overtones and hints of malt. Alcohol is hardly noticeable. Excellent !!

Very scotchy barleywine. I loved this beer. The Big Beer beers of Smutty have always blown me away, save for the Farmhouse. The Maibock, Imperial Stout, Big A, Wheat Wine, and now this one here, have all been downright impressive. Lots of sugary fruits in this BW, the way they’re meant to be. My bottle was aged nearly a year but the hops were still very much in the aroma and initial bite, though they were balanced and overtaken by sweetness which was nice. Nose of berries, molasses, butter, hops, and lots of alcohol though pleasant. Excellent.

shared bomber on 4/6/08, rating from notes taken. pours a deep red with a bit of head... excellent hoppy and citrus filled aroma. Spicy and hoppy up front, smooth on the sides and a short bitter finish. Overall an excellent Barley Wine... so far my favorite beer from Smuttynose.

Nice BW...Pours a amber orange color with a long lasting thin head that leaves a nice coat of lace on the glass. The aroma is that of dried fruit and is fairly non descript. Teh beer has nice body adn is on the hoppoer side of the pendulum. Caramel sweetness and toffee overtones lend to a nice barley wine.

22oz 2007 bottle courtesy of UncleJedi, thank you very much! I always like to put my nose to the bottle immediately after opening and this one gave me a blast of hops that made em smile and transitioned into orange and toffee. The smells from my snifter are more citrus and toffee but not too hoppy. There are also a slight bit of alcohol fumes. The color is a nice red-orange and looks like an Ameican style barleywine to me. The taste is very nice, hoppy, chewy, bitterness that is nice! The second sip makes me think of bubblegum. This is a nice barleywine and almost seems West Coast like Bigfoot. Smuttynose is a brewery I don’t hear a lot about but all of their beers have been very good. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 04-08-2008 02:21:34
