Good aroma here, lotsa fruity hops with a big caramel malt base. Flavor was less impressive though. Felt off balance and there was quite a bit of alcohol in the finish. Not drowned in it, but much more than I prefer. Bitter finish with a syrupy mouthfeel. Not bad overall. jrob21 (1268), Atlanta, Georgia, USA

The oxidation was fairly present in this one but it worked well with the big malt profile that I tasted in this beer. I really could pick up on much hops at all, and that would be the biggest downfall to this brew, but maybe they ae a little more present in fresher bottles. Overall it was a pretty good beer. swoopjones (1915), Buffalo, New York, USA

Started off a little harshwith an alcohol burn but got much better as it warmed up. Piney hops, brown sugar toffee. Pretty good Aubrey (2777), Denver, Colorado, USA

Malts were sweet, with notes of chocolate-covered caramel and syrup. Very warming and cozy. Grassy bitterness. Perhaps a little oxidized, but it didn’t bother me so much under all the other weight. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Apr 8, 2004 Beer pours copper color with red highlights and has a fairly small rapidly diminishing off white head. Aroma is sweet malt with a nice dose of hops thrown in. A bit floral and aged in the nose. Flavor is initally pretty sweet. Finish is a bit purfumey from the hops. Decent. Nose has maple, lots of caramel, quite malty, typically barleywine sweet. Sweet and malty, some hops, a bit sour. Isn’t quite as full as I’d like. Alcohol also a mite overly noticeable. Decent.
