Commercial Description:
For our hopping regime we went with Cascade and Nuggets in the boiling addition. Centennials were added every 5 minutes for the last 30 minutes of the boil. We added Crystals into the whirlpool. Dry hopping was done in both the fermentor after primary fermentation and the bright tank. We used a mixture of Chinook, Nuggets, and Sterlings in the fermentors and whole leaf Centennials in the bright tank.

Bottle. Aroma waffles about between citrus, pine, and grapefruit-specific citrus. Flavor very tangy citrus, tanginess almost reaches an odd sourness at first, but clears up. Palate was also a bit abrasive at first (very lightly abrasive if that makes sense), but through the glass, came to want the beer more and more. Not my favorite DIPA, but certainly very tasty.

Bottle, 2008. Weird label illustration. Pours a cloudy orange with a thick, huge white head that persists and leaves nice lacing on the glass. Aroma strongly of citrus (orange and lemon), grapefruit, piney hops. Very inviting. Initial flavor is of the same citrus, grapefruit, and piney hops - very harsh and tangy, lots of spices. Very powerful flavor. As the beer warms, the mouthfeel does mellow a bit, more sweet cookie malt comes out, along with some butter, bitter hops. I enjoyed this a lot. This matches up quite well with the other big IPAs and definitely holds its own. One of my favorite Smuttynose beers.

2008 bottle. Hazy orange pour with fluffy off-white head. Big piney hop aroma. Spicy hop flavor and sweet malts in a well balanced combination. Slightly cloying, but still a good beer

2008. Pours a muddled orange with a thin off-white head with good lacing. Very piney hop aroma. Wonderful hop bouquet flavor but I don’t find it all that balanced. A little bitter resiny hop oil clings to the back of the tongue in the aftertaste. Good IPA, I feel like it would mellow nicely with some cellaring.

draft at coles- yum. a welcome treat and surpise. very clean pine/grapefruit flavor, and smooth drinkability for an dipa of this magnitude. Worth getting back into.

nice cloudy orange brown body with a small white head. The aroma is a pretty typical IPA aroma with lots of grapefruit and orange. The flavor is more interesting with a weird hint of chocolate or coffee to go with the citrus.

Bottle year 2006. Yellow orange color, moderate head, decent lacings and retention. C hops and C malt aroma. Taste displays more hop variety and good balance with malt. Very sweet. Hop flavors are not as lively as a fresh IIPA. Must get it fresh next time it is available. Somewhat sticky and resiny.

My first Smuttynose beer and what an experience! Pours orange, with a white, thin head. Hoppy, citrus aroma. Starts bitters with a bit of high alcohol sweetness. Finishes bitter and stays with you, which makes me want to keep drinking. It’s a very well balanced beer, right up my alley. I can pick it up for $5 at my local here in Milwaukee (Discount Liquor) and I can’t wait to have another. I’d probably fly to New Hampshire just to try this on cask... Bravo.
