Commercial Description:
For our hopping regime we went with Cascade and Nuggets in the boiling addition. Centennials were added every 5 minutes for the last 30 minutes of the boil. We added Crystals into the whirlpool. Dry hopping was done in both the fermentor after primary fermentation and the bright tank. We used a mixture of Chinook, Nuggets, and Sterlings in the fermentors and whole leaf Centennials in the bright tank.

22oz bottle from Charles Street Liquors, Boston. Gold colour, thin head. Massive hoppy aroma. Definitely lots of mandarin orange to go with the herbaceous and the resinous. Orange also to the fore on the palate. Coupled with a warming alcohol presence and a fairly sweet mouthfeel, I find distinct echoes of Cointreau or some other orange liquer. There’s quite a strong bitterness to go with the sweetness that lingers into the aftertaste together with a slightly hot alcohol remnant. Undeniably a big beer with not much room for subtlety. Very tasty but just a touch too sweet, verging on syrupy, for me.

Post Thanksgiving dinner feast. Pours an almost clear orange with a large, pillowy, white head from the 22oz. bottle into a snifter: Aroma is extremely inviting with sweet hops. Flavor has a little more earthiness to it but still holds to that sweet bite, though not as much as the nose. Drinkability: Pleasantly light bodied, softly carbonated and for an IPA, it’s pretty refreshing. Rebuy: Yes. #233 on 29112009, DG.

Bomber from Chevy Chase in DC shared with the ol’ man. Pours a bright slightly hazy golden-orange with a fairly large white head and great lacing. Aroma is nice sweet malt and a blast of citrusy and floral hops. Flavor is really citrusy and resinous with orange, grapefruit, and other light fruits. Very heavy on the hops. Medium-full body for the style but not too syrupy and brutal hops coating your mouth. Really excellent - one of the better east coast DIPAs.

Mostly clear amber pour, billowing white head. Aroma holds mostly hop character, with notes of grapefruit, orange rind, resin, spruce, floral, and a bit of rosemary. Malt is very subtle, with maybe a bit of caramel complimenting the hop. Flavor is heavy with rosemary, evergreen, and resin, along with lighter notes of grapefruit. Malt isn’t particuarly present, but also isn’t particularly necessary; love this kind of hop bomb. Palate is sticky and resinous, but with a drinkable dryness at the finish. Another stellar effort from Smutty.

22 oz. bottle from Green’s on Ponce De Leon. Nice thin head that doesn’t fade away quickly. Yellow haze appearance; this double/IPA looks pretty good. Nice orange citrus hop aroma. Very pungent beer I must say. Very nice citrus hop aroma; I definitely smell grapefruit as well. The hop flavor is really nice. I get a clean hop flavor. Very nice grapefruit/citrus hop flavor. The hop flavor is really all that stands out, there is not much to balance it out. Don’t get me wrong the beer is very nice, and I love the flavor. The beer has a decent palate. Overall, a lovely citrus hop flavor and aroma.

22oz bottle. clear light orange, almost gold, under a medium sized sudsy white head. slightly lifeless appearance. peachy, mandarin orange hop aroma. light bodied and crisp palate. bitter, lightly astringent finish. flavors of peach and orange, lychee. sweet hoppy profile. reminds me of hop stoopid but not quite as smooth in the palate. solid effort overall.

Really nice DIPA, just what you’d expect from Smuttynose, good floral and pine notes with a citrus aftertaste. the palate is a little "fat" not crisp enough to warrant a 5 out of 5 for palate, but still very easy to drink. I love their regular IPA but it has a sort of acidic feel to it that this DIPA has none of. Will definitely do it again.

Pours a clear pale golden orange color with hints of peach and dark golden yellow hues when held to a light source. Two finger frothy, pillowy head that has excellent retention, only slowly fading into a lasting ring that leaves rings of chunky, soapy lacing. Resinous earthy floral hop aroma with lots of dank hop oils, citrus and pine notes. Slight alcohol presence with a nice biscuit/graham cracker malt character. This smells extremely fresh with lots of grapefruit, orange and lemon peel. One of the better smelling DIPAs I’ve had in some time. Chewy, resinous medium body with lots of uber-fresh, floral hops bursting through. A good bit of dry and bitter flavor that balances out the sweetness of the citrus flavors. Lots of grapefruit, pineapple, mango and citrus peel excellently balanced by dry pine notes, slight alcohol warmth and biscuity graham cracker malt backbone. Their is a slight alcohol presence but overall the high ABV is very well masked, and this well balanced DIPA is dangerously drinkable. Excellent interpretation of the style. The latest batch just hit shelves (in the Philly area at least) so I strongly recommend going out and getting it now while it’s at it’s peak.

Orangish pour. White head. Aroma is loaded with citrus peel and caramel malt. Flavor is juicy and hoppy. Bitter and sweet. Very good.
