Commercial Description:
Gravitation Belgian Quad is the newest offering in the Smuttynose Big Beer Series. This strong dark ale is brewed using a variety of Belgian specialty malts along with 200 pounds of raisin puree per batch. The resulting flavor is a viscous mix of dark fruit, rum, toffee and raisins balanced with aromatic fruitiness of the Belgian yeast. The beer weighs in at 8.5% ABV from a starting gravity of 23 degrees Plato.

22 oz. Dark ruby/amber pour. Fairly large off white head, but does disappear fairly quickly to a ring. Does stick to the glass a bit. Lots of brown sugar and malt in the aroma. Taste is almost cloyingly sweet at first. Brown sugar, raisin, candied plum or dark fruit of some sort. Some biscuity body. As it warms up the candied sweetness fades and is more malty/molasses sweet. Lively enough mouthfeel. Not really any hop presence in this throughout. Not my fave, but certainly above the average and drinkable on a descently warm spring night.

High hopes for this quad, especially after smelling it. Lots of yeasty, rich plum aromas, with a nice raisin backing, some orange, and a fine peppery tint. The flavor profile of the beer, however, is exceedingly sweet. For a quad to have this candi sugar aggressiveness, to me it’s unforgivable. The delicate aromas are lost on the heavy-handed, slick palate and cloying finish. Furthermore, the high alcohol does little to elevate the flavors here.

Nice reddish brown color with a good raisin-y aroma. It feels thick in the mouth with a big raisin flavor that sits on your tongue and hangs out for a long while. Good!

Pours a dark amber color with a reddish tint, and there is a thin head and some spotted lacing along the sides of the glass. the nose is full of caramel malt and some floral hops but the caramel overpowers it. The flavor is nice and robust with some bitter notes that bite your tongue and a toffee stickiness that sticks to your palate like a beer glue. Overall it has a nicely balanced body with the right amount of carbonation.

Pours mahogany with a creamy tan head. Aroma of belgian yeast, cola, brown sugar, slight woodiness, caramel, some nice spice, raisin, clove, and plum. Bright and sweet to start, with plenty of raisin, plum, fig, and brown sugar, finishing with yeasty bready notes and caramel. Full, creamy body with light carbonation. Very nice.

Bottle. Poured a dark chestnut color minimal off-white head. Nose is caramel with alcohol, raisin, and bread. Flavor is sweet caramel malt with more raisin, molasses, and mild yeast.
