badlizard (2325), Berkeley, California, USA Sep 6, 2007 650 ml bottle from archer liquors. Black with a creamy brown head. Rich sweet chocolate and satisfying earthy ground coffee aroma. Medium bodied, velvet, slightly sticky palate. Initial sweetness transitions to a bitter dark chocolate taste which gives way to a satin caramel flavor and a distinctive nuttiness and finally finishing with a long dry roasty espresso flavor. Give your snifter a swirl as the beer warms up. It takes on a really interesting walnut and black currant aroma. This quite an excellent and under appreciated beer. kp (8400), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Sep 1, 2007 Date: 10/04/1997

black, fine tan head that quickly fades away, drops of lace, sweet roasted aroma with dark chocolate and licorice and a fruity vinous character, same creamy body, rich dark chocolate balanced by light bitterness, lingering bitterness from the dark chocolate but not the normal astrengency from dark malts, touch of dark ripe fruits adds a sweet character, a touch of citrus in a hoppy roasted bitter finish

Cornfield (4892), Oak Forest, Illinois, USA Aug 30, 2007 Dark brown as it leaves the bottle, this Stout is quite black in the glass. The well sustained head is a yellowish tan in color. Quite a few components in the aroma - roasted malt and barley, dark caramel, old coffee grounds, aniseed, alcohol, runny chocolate, and a hint of smoke. Much of the commercial description is wrapped up about the hops in the brew, but they don’t show much of a presence save for a dry bitter finish. The flavor is pretty much like the nose except that the alcohol is more prominent, almost distractingly so. All in all, a real decent warmer of a beer.
Hazmatt (363), Virginia, USA Aug 29, 2007 Draught. Thick, black ruddy, small head. Aroma is very complex. Roast malt, caramel, tofee, chocolate, hint of smoke. Interesting and pleasant. Sweet but not cloying, good amount of bitterness, bit of astringency. Flavors come out as it warms, some borbon and vanilla extract flavors. Good stuff. hellbilly (1499), scottsdale über alles, Arizona, USA Aug 27, 2007 bottle 2007. pours the color of the brown bottle with some crimson tints. sweet cocoa powder aroma like nesquick with vinous zinfandel quailties. flavors...vanilla, wood/ashiness, chocolate powder, cream and some coffee on the dry finish. mouth feel is medium with more cream. if it weren’t for the alcohol presence when this warms, it would be considered a "boring " beer. i’d like to have this fresh to be able to actually get some hoppy bitterness... BrewmeisterEd (59), USA Aug 25, 2007 poured thick w/ a guinness head...Black as night...good lacing...more chocolate than coffee, but hints of the latter present...very sweet tasting...almost like a milk stout...full bodied mouth feel...alcoholic presence is definitely there, but more of a taste - not ’hot’ going down...bit of a bitter after taste...first imperial stout I’ve tasted, so nothing to compare against, but definitely a winner...bought in August - so out of season?? Also, my bottle had an olive background on the top of the label as compared to the sky blue pictured...I like it! Sassenach (59), USA Aug 24, 2007 Pours like motor oil with almost no head, and has a very similar smell to motor oil, but with much more sweetened cocoa and hops. Has a numbing bitter cocoa dryness that is accented well by an imperial hop taste. The hop content is ideal for this beer. Slight chalky velvet feel, but again, the hops are incredibly well balanced - with black coffee/vanilla bean as icing on the cake. badnewsbeers (1026), Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA Aug 24, 2007 wow..aquired this gem via trade with Schutzenliesel...pours black with small ochre head..beautiful lacing, perfectly carbonated body...aroma large in mildy sweet yet bitter dark chocolate, nuts, coffee and toast...perfectly textured, this body is full of roasted malts, toast, chocolate, raison, cocoa powder, and mild hops...finishes slightly bitter and dry...one of the darkest stouts to date
