| 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | May 15, 2007 Updated: Jun 11, 2009Poured a deathly black with a thick lacing reddish tan head. Smells awesome, more hops than you get in a usual imperial stout. Aroma of potpourri, chocolate, coffee, nuts, and grain. Flavor was very nice as well. Chocolate, plums, grapes, licorice, malt, caramel etc etc etc. This beer is not at all overwhelming on the palate with a velvety texture and a slightly bitter finish that melds into a lasting coffee flavor. Love Smutty, Love this beer.
RE-RATE 6/11/2009. Had a pint of this on cask at Rustico. The cask was aged on Redbush Chai leaves. Pours a opaque red, rusty brown with a thick, creamy white head. Thick and slightly oily. Aroma is very mild, tea, grapes, malt, very earthy in the nose. Flavor was excellent. The chai really lent an earthiness to the beer along with a great texture and mouthfeel. It eliminated any booziness and made this a beer you could drink ten of. I loved the original, the cask conditioned chai aged version is just as good and brings it to a new level. hoppymeal (38), Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 13, 2007 Pours black with a nice tan head. Smells of coffee, rich chocolate, and some piney hoppiness. Acidic roastiness up front in the taste, a hint of the sweet chocolatey malts, and a slightly bitter finish with some nice warming alcohol. Big beer series is definitely acurate with 22 oz of Imperial Stout. Medium to heavy body starts creamy, but as it warmed seemed to thin out. I drank this 2006 sample fresh as it’s my only one but would like to see what a year in the cellar does to mellow the hops and bring out the maltiness. Nevertheless, fresh was very good.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 8, 2007 Updated: May 9, 20072007 bottle, somewhat fresh, found at Astor Liquor. Deep brown body with a semi-dark tan and brown head, filmy really, not tall or building, but also not invisible. Oily, viscous brown resin coats the glass. Nose of robust dark, bitter bakers chocolate, smoked cream, smoky, charred toast and charred/burnt milk. Hints of vanilla cream, some floral lactic scents as well, some lighter peppery, vegetal notes, with the creamy yeast being most evident. Exceptionally deep nose, yet completely focused on the chocolate and charred malts, not really any dark fruit or sugar presence. Moderate thickness, doesn’t devour the palate, rather it’s lightly syrupy, oily, with a medium to light dried vanilla and malted milk ball flavor wrapped up in a heap of bitter dark chocolate and charred cereal grains. It leaves on the tongue a very slight pastiness. Rich toffee and vanilla flavors show up in a lingering, resiny, chocolately finish. Very good all around, I like the medium thickness opposed to a more viscous texture. Well-made and fresh and moderately malt-forward. RCL (1458), Waltham, Massachusetts, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 6, 2007 22 oz. bottle. Poured syrupy, almost black with a small creamy brown head, good retention. Aroma of espresso, chocolate, caramel, and alcohol. Rich flavor immediately consumed the tastebuds, with notes of coffee, chocolate, alcohol, and a malty sweetness that finished with a nice bitter hoppy/alcoholic bite. A great nightcap. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 6, 2007 Pours a deep dark brown color with brown head that fades quickly. Aroma of light chocolate, copious amounts of citrus and pine flavors, and roasted malt. Taste is coffee, light chocolate, roasted malt, citrus hops, alcohol. I’m a hop addict but I’m not use to the amount of hops in this impy stout. Great beer but it would benefit from some aging. anders37 (4579), Malmö, Sweden
