Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

2006 bomber. Pours dark, with a medium off-white head. Typical impy stout looking. Nose is definitely NOT typical, with mega-hops, roastiness, and chocolate. Flavor is chocolate, with coffee, and finishes with hops. Tastes a bit similar to the Stone IRS. Has a bit of a fizzy, oily mouthfeel. It has such a unique flavor that I know I’m going to need to have it again.

Hi. I am in love with Smuttynose Imperial Stout. I am contacting a lawyer right now to start divorce proceedings. I am running away with Smuttynose Imperial Stout to an island and we are going to have delicious smelling, dark, and chocolately babies. Yum.

Very dark, muddy, rusty-brown body with a lush, creamy light brown head. Earthy floral hop notes with strong alcohol, subdued vanilla, creamy milk chocolate and green bananas. Flavor has smoky, cigar notes but no excessively harsh roasty qualities. As in the aroma, this is somewhat green tasting and has lots of apparent alcohol. Smooth and creamy texture. Good, but needs time.

Very dark brownish opaque black (but not inky) with a brown head. Lots of piney hops and rich chocolate in the nose; nice. Heavy intermingling of citrusy/piney Pacific NW hops and roastiness. Flavor has notes of pine, grapefruit, burnt wood, roasted malt, dark rich coffee, plum, raisin, caramel, dark chocolate and red wine. Pretty complex. Full, round and lush on the palate with moderate carbonation. Good stuff.

Small choco brown head, fair retention, lace is thin but lasting. Roasty, chocolatey and hoppy, piney. Body is full and oily on the palate. Plenty of hops clawing their way out of the darkness to assert themselves. Lightly sweet malts, roasty, chocolatey with some all day cooked coffee notes, light fruitiness and maybe some black malt flavors as well. Lightly sweet malty, roasty finish. Maybe a touch of alc. as well, considering. A big, roasty, hoppy Impy! Good ole Smutty.

"nice beer Poured a dark dark black brown edges didn’t lace well in my glass. Aroma was of roasted coffee chocolate. Flavor was much the same, some bitterness and yet still sweet. Little licorice in there. Solid beer."

An outstanding production by the folks up at Smutty, perhaps their best beer. Sure, I like Smutty, but this exceeded expectations. It was actually darned predictable, just like the bottle says: chocolate, coffee, dry fruits, and hoppy. The hops were bold (somewhat pine-like) and assertive, but not overdone. Two thumbs up on this one, smooth and creamy, very nice.

(2006 Vintage) Very fresh minty hop nose. Pitch black. Drinks nice and easy fro 10% ABV. Fairly dry which I like, otherwise a hop forward chocolate/coffee bomb. Smuttynose hit the mark on this one. Strorm King like hops.
