Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

22oz. bottle. 2006 vintage. Nearly opaque brown-red, thing film of dark tan head. Sweet malt, some chocolate, and alcohol in the aroma. Earthy dark chocolate and some roastiness underneath a heavy resinous hop bitterness. Coffee bitterness and astringency in the finish with some residual hoppiness, some alcohol heat as well. Mouthfeel is fairly heavy, rather dry.

Pours very dark, but also sports a reddish tint around the tip of the rim; almost a mahogony. The mocha head diminishes quickly.<!-- br --><!-- br --> It’s a very smooth drink; almost sweet, & very thick. You <!-- em -->can<!-- /em --> taste the alcohol in the aftertaste, but it’s not too terribly bad.

Bottle shared with Hogtown Harry, Blankboy, and Dave, courtesy of blankboy. Resiny green hops, lots of chocolate malt in very sweet aroma - wow. Pitch black, creamy tan head. Very roast and bitter taste. Sweet; nice alcohol burn as well (tastes stronger than 7%). Just a very very nice version of an impy stout, falling on the hoppy side of the scale. Nice job!

Hey! Alright! A nice stout. Not too overwhelming. This could almost be an "all day" kinda of brew for me. Just slightly overwhelming, but I expected that. Great hop follow up mixed in with the dark notes. Bravo! Nice beer.

Poured opaque black with a medium sized, tan head that left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma was somewhat vinuous, leading to roasted malts, some cocoa, piney hops, dark fruits, and alcohol as well. Taste was bitter roasted malts up front, with smoke, sweet chocolate, dried fruits, vanilla, more piney hops, and a touch of alcohol in the finish.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, tupalev & Dave B. -- my bottle courtesy of Thaichile. Pours a deep dark brown with a good size semi-lasting creamy light-brown head. Fantastic aroma is big time resiny hops with dark malt, chocolate and hints of fruit -- man that smells good! The malty roastness comes out more in the flavour along with tons of hops, some fruit, coffee and some alcohol (the alcohol’s present but it doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the beer at all). Nice full body and creamy mouthfeel. An awesome Stout, exactly how I like it, with tons of hops -- must get more!

Robe noire surmontée d’une mousse brune mince qui persiste. Arômes de houblon résineux, de sapin et d’agrumes. Saveurs de sapin, d’agrumes, de houblon résineux et de malt torréfié. Sirupeuse.

Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy, tupalev and Dave B - blankboy’s bottle. Impenetrable black with a large lasting brown creamy-foamy head. Rich aroma - full resiny green hops, rich molasses and chocolate overroast malt, spicy, resonated with my sniffer - it’s tingling. Taste is very bitter - there’s dark molasses malt, quite a bit of alcohol, smooth finish but a touch boozy for 7%. Creamy body, a little thin, bitter finish - very very good.
