Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Special thanks to "unknown sender" for this beer. 09 bottle. Pours black with a bubbly light brown head. Aroma is very very hop heavy! Wow. Notes of pine, plant, pepper, spice, leaves, tea, sweetened espresso, licorice, and biscotti. Taste is balanced with dark chocolate, strong hop flavors (pepper, pine, earth, leaves, spice) caramel, charred creme brulee crust, light maple, and chocolate truffle dust. Finishes with earth, ash, wood, but there’s lingering dark chocolate, espresso and cocoa as well. For all the hops, the finish is not as bitter as anticipated. Creamy and thick, mostly heavy mouthfeel avoids ever being syrupy. Soft carbonation. I was worried about the hopping being strange and out of place here, but I’m impressed how well the beer manages those characteristics. Nice!

Bottle courtesy of Santa. Thanks Santa!!! Pours black with tan head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, some hops, and brown sugar. Smooth and somewhat creamy mouthfeel. Flavor follows the nose and roasty, chocolatey, and just damn good. Finishes smooth and has a nice lingering chocolate taste. Real nice. Thanks Santa!

Smuttynose Imperial Stout. I sampled 22 ounces bottled in 2009. This beer poured like motor oil, but tastes like heaven. An extra dark, ebony body topped off by a dense, super-long-lasting, dark tan head. A richly aromatic hop nose is backed by a dense caramel sweetness. Palate entry is tremendously sweet, but quickly tempered by enduring and assertively-hopped dry finish. The buttery mouthfeel also yields mid-palate flavors of vanilla bean, milk chocolate and coffee. This beer is lightly carbonated and has a well-masked high ABV. It’s an excellent long-term sipper to be enjoyed over time. Fantastic!

Location: 22 oz bottle from State Line, 12/29/09
2009 Bottle that I’ve had for about 5 months

Aroma: The nose has some licorice, roasted coffee, and semi-sweet chocolate
Appearance: Pours a dark brown-black color with a creamy brown head and some drippy lace
Flavor: Taste is balanced, big roasted malt presence with a smooth hop backing
Palate: The texture is thick, and a bit oily, a medium-full body, it does a really nice job of hiding the ABV
Overall Impression: This beer is pretty solid. I’d heard that it was too strong on hops from some malt lovers, but really, I didn’t think so at all. What I really got was a nice balanced Imperial Stout. I’ve been sitting on this one for a few months, as I’d heard it did well with a little aging. Anyway, it is a very sold beer.

Bottle. Very dark brown to black pour with a big foamy brown head. Looks creamy and is exactly that on mouthfeel. Aroma of sweet chocolate and hop. Taste is black licorice, chocolate, roast, and a bit of hop edge as well. Pretty awesome stuff.

This one poured a pitch black color with a dark tan head. Aroma was black licoriice, dark roasted malts, some burnt coffee as well. Flavor was silky chocolate, lots of roasted notes and some smoke in there too.

Pours very dark brown with a dense two finger brown head. The aroma is chocolaty with plums, black cherry, smoke and molasses. The flavor is very roasted, almost burnt at the end. Very bitter, not very sweet, more of a molasses flavor with coffee and chocolate. Quite smooth.

Very impressive stout, that pours very dark and has a medium head. Odors of chocolate and caramel are prominent. Loaded with flavor, and is very smooth. By far one of my favorite stouts.
