| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Aug 22, 2006 Deep, dark brown. Big notes of chocolate, followed by a healthy bitterness of pine and grass. Some roast in the aroma. Earthy. In a way, it seemed more stout-like than imperial stout-like. Pretty good, but not overly complex or deep. after4ever (2773), Brier, Washington, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Nov 5, 2006 Bomber--thanks, 46er3498! Pours rich, black, inky. Solid tan head. Chocolate/coffee/hop nose. Moderately high density for the body, and moderately low carb--neither of these is all the way high or low. All of the elements from the nose persist to the palate, but the hop takes full form with the finish, gaining a more distinct piney note. This is a great beer, but not quite inspired or innovative. If it was available around here, I would drink it all the time. Ibrew2or3 (2761), Safety Harbor, Florida, USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jul 17, 2008 Courtesy of tpd975. Pours deep darkness with thin mocha head. The aroma is dark roastiness with some dark fruity esters, mild burnt malts and some toffee. The nose really gets nicer as it warms. The taste is dark roastiness, some burnt malts, dark chocolate and some sense of alcohol. Sweet roasty and decadent. This is real yummy. Nuffield (2724), Roseville, Minnesota, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 11, 2004 For nearly ten years my wife and I have made our own breakfast cereal--a homemade granola from oatmeal, oat bran, wheat germ, molasses, honey, and nuts. Every few years someone forgets to set the over timer and we return to a kitchen full of smoke from burnt granola. If Smuttynose ever needs the inspiration for a new BIG beer, I could send them the whole pan (which we inevitably end up throwing out anyway), caked with burnt molasses and grains. This beer is big, for sure, just pounding away at the senses with roasted/burnt coffee and chocolate. Roasted. Very roasted. Big black, with a nice dark tan head, fully opaque. Decent palate, not noteworthily silky but substantial and tingling nicely with the aftereffects of the beer. Nicely restrained alcohol (nice to see an Imperial Stout at 7.1% abv rather than the all-too-common 10%+ ones). Good flavors (roasted, molasses, chocoate, coffee, hops are there)...did I mention this is a very roasted beer? IrishBoy (2713), Bakersfield, California, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 20, 2008 Big black pour. Thick and opaque with half-inch brown head. Not expressively aromatic. some coffee. Roasted malt flavors dissipate into a smooth, mellow, no-nonsense brew. Nice slick mouthfeel. Rich without being the slightest bit roasty. michael-pollack (2704), King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Aug 12, 2007 22oz. Bottle: Aroma is medium to heavily sweet. Smells of malts, dark fruits, chocolate, tar, and burning. Poured black in color with a big, dense, rocky, dark brown head that lasted throughout. Excellent lacing. Opaque. Flavor is medium sweet and lightly to medium bitter. Tastes of chocolate, coffee, cream, hops, alcohol, and a bit of dark fruit. Medium to full body. Thin, dry texture. Soft carbonation. Dry, chocolate, bitter finish. Overall, a nice Impy Stout that made a great breakfast.
