Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Deep black body, the head is short but an interesting color - kind of purple tan (?), thin lacing. Roasty sweet malt aroma. Taste is somewhat sharp - bitter roasted coffee, dark chocolate, hoppy finish. Thinner body than many other impy stouts. This tastes great with blueberries, raspberries, etc. (I picked this bottle up in New Jersey, Ocotober, 2004)

An outstanding production by the folks up at Smutty, perhaps their best beer. Sure, I like Smutty, but this exceeded expectations. It was actually darned predictable, just like the bottle says: chocolate, coffee, dry fruits, and hoppy. The hops were bold (somewhat pine-like) and assertive, but not overdone. Two thumbs up on this one, smooth and creamy, very nice.

Bottle courtesy of Hogtownharry: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of bitter roasted malt with some coffee notes is interesting. Taste is dominated by some roasted malt, which are quite bitter with some dry coffee notes. I thought the taste was a bit too dry generally and some sweetness to balance the dryness would have been good. Body is quite full with some good carbonation and no alcohol was discernable.

This Imperial stout pours with a black body topped by a medium thick head with some lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet yet bitter with a note of licorice, a touch of coffee and a little roastiness. The flavor is slightly sweet yet bitter and hoppy with a touch of coffee, a very slight rostiness and some licorice. Full bodied, smooth and a touch tingly.

Very dark body with an OK head. The aroma is VERY roasty. The same follows into the flavor with just enough hops to back up the nice roasted malt backbone. This isn’t an exciting Imperial Stout, it’s just a good beer. I could drink this one on a regular basis. A bit of chocolate rounds out the whole deal, but this isn’t really much different than a typical good stout.

650 ml bottle from archer liquors. Black with a creamy brown head. Rich sweet chocolate and satisfying earthy ground coffee aroma. Medium bodied, velvet, slightly sticky palate. Initial sweetness transitions to a bitter dark chocolate taste which gives way to a satin caramel flavor and a distinctive nuttiness and finally finishing with a long dry roasty espresso flavor. Give your snifter a swirl as the beer warms up. It takes on a really interesting walnut and black currant aroma. This quite an excellent and under appreciated beer.

2007 bottle aged about 8 months. Pours an extremely dark chocolate brown to virtually black body. A large, foamy tan head shows good retention, leaving behind thick spiderwebs of lacing on the entire glass. The aroma is big and bold, with massive amounts of melted dark chocolate meeting a surprisingly huge dose of grassy, piney hops. I was nearly bowled over by the hop content, which I did not expect, but quite enjoyed. Anise and licorice were present in the nose as well, adding depth and complexity. The flavor was again very hop forward, which makes sense now that I’m reading the commercial description. The chocolate component is like a melted dark Ghiradelli bar, sweet and round. Hops are again grassy, with alot of pine resin showing as well. A full, obtuse mouthfeel is quite slick on the tongue and not at all cloying. Overall, this is a very satisfying brew. Unique in its massive hop character, this one would probably just get better with age as the green flavors calm down a bit.

22oz bottle, thanks to jah noth for these bombers. pours very dark with tan head that doesn’t last long. nose is mainly fresh roasted coffee with sweet milk chocolate notes, possible flower hop and vanilla oak undertones. flavor is rather roasty with sweet chocolate and dark coffee notes with hints of vanilla, a very rich flavor that finishes with a good amount of hop bitterness. mouthfeel is a tad thin, medium length on the palate, and no alcohol. a very solid imperial stout but not really groundbreaking.3.8

4/28/08, 2006 vintage, cellared for 20 months or so. pours black with small head. aroma of raisins, chocolate, caramel, and coffee roast. flavors are roasty, dark fruity, licorice, and dry milk chocolate finish. mouth feel is a bit thin with low carbonation. 3.7.
