Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Pour is deep black with a thin tan head...smell is lots of coffee with some vanilla, sherry, chocolate...mouthfeel is a little thin...taste is chocolate to coffee to sweet alcohol with a bitter coffee finish...nice, but not remarkable...

Thanks to whomever shared this at the RB gathering at O’Brien’s last nite. This is a very dry, smokey imperial stout, with all of the usual appearance characteristics (it’s black). Tasty.

Bottle Conditioned in 2006

3/20/2008: Smuttynose Imperial Stout is dark brown (looks like regular coffee) and has a really thin tan head that quickly fades away. The aroma is huge and very inviting. It contains a wonderful combination of vanilla cream, rich milk chocolate, vodka, mocha-flavored milk, and some really smooth roasted malt. The flavor is like a liquid milk chocolate bar with notes of creamed coffee. Roasted malt abounds in the dry finish at first, but then it become more sweet and mocha-like with undertones of licorice and smoke. Some hop flavor (Cascade-like and slightly soapy) and bitterness also appears briefly in the backend of this beer and lingers through the cigar tobacco-like finish that also contains a bit of apricot that seems to grow as the beer warms. This beer is think and creamy, very smooth and velvety, and all-around excellent on the palate. Overall this is an EXCELLENT beer! It is big, bold, and flavorful as well as balanced, dangerously easy to drink, and quite complex. There are many levels to the aroma and flavor of this beer all of which are exciting to explore and enjoy.

22 fl. oz. bottle from adrian910ss. Thank you Adrian! Rating #398 for this beer...

Deep dark color, full-on blackness, good, toasty tan froth atop. Aroma is wickedly twisted, rich and darkly delicious, full of anise, espresso, and more, roasty and redolent with all things dark and deadly. Taste repeats all these things and more, thick and roasty, huge and at-large in the mouth. A nearly perfect by-the-numbers Imperial Stout, and the numbers are spot-on, though, make no mistake! Yum, I’m saying, as the booze swills around me..yum, I says, and it’s a delightful feeling, indeed. A top-notch example of the IS style...can’t see a thing wrong with it. Smuttynose did it right, like they always do! Fullest body, long, infinitely long finish, in a word, wow, no, actually, "yummy, McYumerSon’s" will do quite nicely, don’t you think?

Deep dark black with a hint of ruby at the edge. Thick, creamy dark tan head. Refreshing roasty aroma with spruce emanates, very pleasant. Flavor matched closely. This wasn’t a thick, contemplative Impy, this one was meant to throw back and enjoy. I did.

Bomber: Mocha coffee aroma, lots of malts in there too. Pours the proverbial jet black with robust tan head. VEry very silky palate. Lots of coffee throughout. Alcohol is hidden well. A nice (imperial) stout.

22oz bottle. 05.31.04 Pours jet black with a thin, marbly head. Aromas of roasty cocoa, coffee, dried apricot, cherry. Flavors are huge, popping mouthfuls of bitter, roasted goodness. Not even close to sweet. All biting, bitter, harsh, and delicious! Finish is slightly astringent, madly bitter, somewhat violent. Awesome beer! Dangerously drinkable.

Bomber from 46er3498 - thanks, Tom! This one bottled in 2007. Big salty licorice and roast aroma, less so coffee when compared to that big, meaty roast. Almost candyish, with lots of malt and sweet IPA hops - grapefruity Cascade overload, maybe some other C-hops. Pitch pour with a gorgeous light brown head that’s as firm as can be and creeps up the sides. Lingers for minutes. Earthy, dark, caramel, hop-drenched, lightly bitter and sticky notes fighting the strong dry roast coffee overtones, chocolate and light figgy molasses. Grapefruit and noticeable alcohol round things out. Very, very dry roast coffee aftertaste with just a touch of hoppy prickling. Otherwise smooth, soft and creamy feel. Has some notes in common with FFF’s Black Sun (that’s a compliment) and Smutty’s own robust porter, but this is a bit richer and fuller. This is just way too young and combative, but with some mellowing and melding, I could score this through the roof! I love this, a real stiff drink.
