| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | May 4, 2006 bottle-DLD06 thanks to Richlikebeer for the sample and for generously giving me a bomber to take home. Pours deep brown, almost black with small tan head. huge piney hop aroma, akin to alpha klaus. I dont think i have ever had an imperial stout with this much dry hopping. Definately unique and a nice twist to the style (im a hophead). some roasty undertones after the hop barage. flavors are piney, char, expresso, baking chocolate. body is a little lite for an imp stout, but then again, this one isnt that high gravity. Very nice strong stout in my book! I will revisit this beer soon! fordest (1954), Santee/San Diego, California, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Sep 18, 2006 22 oz bottle. Dark dark pour wth decent brown head. Awesome aromas. Very fruity. Apricot, mango, pineapple. chocolate too. Flavor gives up some of the fruit for a very malty roasty beginning, with a very bitter grapefruit hop finish. Alcohol very well hidden. Very good beer. scraff (1946), Baltimore, Maryland, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Oct 13, 2004 Draft - Max’s. The ABV on this version is not 7.1%. Was told the 04 version is 8% (by Smuttynose). Ultra black hole black, creamy dark tan head. Nose bursts full of flavor with black chocolate, Italian roast coffee turned mochachino, sweet vanilla, with a slight dark fruit edge. Sweet and bitter fight the battle to the end. Full bodied, soft carbonation, semi-bitter, dry finish. This version kicks some serious ass. Wish I could have found it in bottles.

| 4.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 12, 2006 Dark, thick, and viscous. Has a light tan head that lasts nicely. Nose of dark fruit and very nice hops, lots of coffee bitterness. Flavor-wise, wonderfully bitter, great coffee and burnt charcoal roasts. Slightly sour and quite powerful, has a good burn to it. Rich and syrupy, really, really nice. I’m generally sick of imperial stouts, but this could restore my faith in the style. StewardofGondor (1934), Washington Heights - Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 2, 2006 2006 bomber, with a HUGE thanks to Clark! Moderate viscosity yet opaque in the snifter with cherry cola colored edges. Some beady bubbles form a wrung while an amoebic sheaf in the center makes up the rest of the head. Consecutive pours yield a tight-packed, deep, thin tan head which reduces soon thereafter. Aroma is striking and dramatic. Black patent, bittersweet chocolate, black licorice, sugar-starved espresso grinds and dried black currant scraped into peppered prune juice. Hints of burnt brown sugar bridge the nose to mouth. This one’s a big boy. Dry, profound flavor abundance and a downright blackened prowess. Black licorice and a burnt, bitter peppercorn persona. A sweet dark dance of sooty french roast snatched from the burr grinder, and luring caramel integrated into stark dark chocolate toffee lozenges. Kissed by flame and broiled to perfection. It’s like steamrolling the tongue onto a barista’s countertop. Dark, heavy palate load and it’s difficult to even push the tongue through to get a crack at it. This bottle’s a youngen, but damn does Smutty know how to walk the line of aggressive balance. Dry finish, ridding the palate and begging for liquid replenishment. This one mandates slurping to catch it in the mouth, and once it’s there, it’s oh so good to suck down. ABUSEDGOAT (1934), California, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 11, 2006 2006 bottle. As I uncapped it, the first thing that hit me was a blast of grapefruity hops. Poured the usual colored body with almost no head or lacing. Also in the aroma besides the hops were the usual dark malt characteristics: roast, coffee and chocolate. Aroma matched the flavor but I also got some piney hops. Also I would have guessed the alcohol to be higher as there was a little bit of burn. Overall a good imperial stout. It wasn’t monstrous but it was still tasty...
