Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Very good Imperial Stout. Dark brown, okay black, small head. Flavor/aroma is chocolate and roast(coffee) mix. Well done. Palate is somewhat thin for an Imp and somewhat sliky. Finish is a mix of sweetness and hops dryness, which is a nice way to close. Thanks DirtyMike!

Black with huge, thick, creamy dark, long lasting brown head and thick creamy head and heavy lacing that hangs on glass. Heavy, rich aroma and flavor of roast malts, chocolate, coffee and wood. Rich ,thick mouthfeel with a deep roasty woody finish. Awesome.

This was surprisingly good. I don’t love Smutty, but their big bottle series ranges from good to great, and this one is maybe the best I’ve had so far. Pours a flat opaque black with no head, just a little discoloration on the top of the glass, and leaves no real lacing. Flat in the mouth, but full and round ... like a stout. Nose is never my favorite part of a beer, but this one is sweet malts and hops. I really enjoy the flavor ... intense and complex ... coffee, espresso, bitter hops, sweet toffee, and burnt malt, with a long, long bitter finish.

Lots of brandy in the stout. Very sweet and malty. Tastes a lot like a barley wine. Missing the traditional Imperial flavors.

Thanks to whomever shared this at Dark Lord Day. For an imperial stout, I was not expecting so much hoppiness but there it was. Along with this I picked up some cherry aromas. The dark black body revealed a super hoppy coffee infused beer that also had caramel and cherry tones. Overall it was good but since I don’t like hoppy imperial stouts, this one fails in that department. Overall, however, it was still somewhat enjoyable if a bit thin.

Bottled. Nearly opaque, very dark warm brown with a small, light brown, frothy, mostly diminishing head. The aroma is malty with moderate-to-heavy notes of smokey roasted grain, moderate caramel, coffee, unsweetened chocolate, molasses; Hoppy with moderate notes of herb, light note of resin/pine; Yeasty with a trace note of basement; Miscellaneous notes of light top soil, left over campfire wood, trace note of underripe banana. The flavor is vivid and engaging: Moderately sweet, moderately-to-heavily bitter, lightly acidic with a long, moderately bittersweet/grippyish, lightly acidic, lightly warm finish. The body is full, the texture is velvety and the carbonation is soft.

Bottle courtesy of a trade with Zathrus13.Pours a deep dark mohagany with a thick dark tan head.Aromas of French roast coffee and dark chocolate are teamed up nicely with a little bit of hops and molasses. It tastes like it smells and you can’t beat that.Nothing worse than a brew having a great aroma then shocking you with no flavor.
