Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Pours a deep black hue with a small white off-white head. aromas of chocolate, coffee, roasted malts. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and the flavors are the sam as the aromas but in a good way. Thi brew is very tasty despite the alcohol tasting.

22 oz bottle via kramer17801 (thanks!). Pours a pitch black with a small tan head. Mild nose with notes of vanilla and licorice. Taste starts out roasty chocolate and then the hops kick in. Wow this is a hoppy Imp Stout. Usually i do not kike a lot of hops in a Stout, but it works here. The roasted malts and hops actually compliment each other quite well. I think there may be a bit of oak undermeath it all as well. This is actually pretty complex. Easy to drink. Medium bodied, silky mouthfeel.

very nice hybrid of a quality -i must say ipa- combined with a NICE stout. clearly from this tap in a popular downtown ny location (thank you LISA) THIS BEER actually morphs in the glass. hoppy at first and refreshing and just barely velvet this beer then becomes heavy on the straw as it settles as it does that in short order. touch of licorice and smooth in the finish as the hops then subside and a pleasant broomstraw settles down. i was done before he left. whaddaya saY -DAVE- ?

Wow... this stuff is pretty darn good. Dark black with a cool tan chocolaty head. The nose is roasted malts with some chocolate. THe taset is gentle yet chalky in a good way with lots of chocolate and roasted very much malty. Prety darn good.

dark tan/sienna head, thick foamy & creamy. black body, light doesn’t shine through. aroma is roasted chocolate malt, a little hops. texture starts creamy but changes with tingly carbonation. flavor is pretty bitter, some licorice root, and dry roasted malt. some coffee flavor in the finish. hoppy aftertaste for a stout.

2006 vintage. 22oz bomber. Duvel tulip. Dark red color, nearing black, tan head. Aroma is fragrant, bright citrus, bittersweet chocolate, light roasty notes. Taste is roasty, floral, light pine, and light citrus, as well as lactose, bittersweet chocolate, and alcohol. Thick mouthfeel. The finish is moderately bitter from the hops and roasted grain. Enjoyable. Reminds me of Free States Ironman Imperial Stout.

Bomber, samples as part of BLIND tasting series. I offer this as an explanation for the carnage that follows. . . sits opaque black with a substantial tan head and lacing. Aroma hits with sharp dark chocolate covered cherries, dark fruit, dried apricot and peach (as it warmed, I began identifying these flavors as hop-contingent). Some of the sharpness of the nose must be due to high levels of alcohol. Upon sipping, initial mouthfeel is thick, syrupy and substantially oily. Flavor starts with bold sweetness, dark chocolate and fruit primarily. Soon after these flavors are joined by some roasts and licorice, maintaining sweetness overall. Lastly, ash and black coffee kick in on the finish in a way that is both jarring and heavy-handed. Without a label to refer back to for guidance (this was a blind tasting), I felt lost in describing how strange this beer was. Don’t get me wrong, there are aspects about it I love (the appearance, novelty, and even the rich finish), but its negatives are too painfully (oily, suffocating palate, rotten fruit elements) that gnaw away my overall standing with this beer.

Inky black body, no head. Roasted coffee aroma. Pretty hoppy flavor, some licorice and chocolate notes as well. The alcohol is very noticable in the finish.
