Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

22 oz. Bottle: Thick black color with a light brown head that diminishes rather quickly. You can smell the extra hops in the aroma, they pretty much dominate. But the taste has a pretty strong flavor of coffee beans, dark chocolate and a robust bitterness. Fairly thick in the feel and leaves a strong flavor in your mouth as well as a slight alcohol burning sensation. This is a powerful stout and very enjoyable. Thanks Indiana_Red!

Draft. Good heavens, this is big. Tremendous roasted grain flavors suffused with wonderful hop flavor and aromatics. Beautiful head and lacing--watching the beer clarify after the barman's pour was quite fun. I would liken this to a roastier, burlier Storm King--all the latter's hops plus more roasted grain. Excellent imperial stout.

bottle. Wow, huge piney hop nose reminiscent of fresh alpha klaus. This is a very good imp stout. Malty flavor with huge hop nose. Very good.

22oz. bottle. 2006 vintage. Nearly opaque brown-red, thing film of dark tan head. Sweet malt, some chocolate, and alcohol in the aroma. Earthy dark chocolate and some roastiness underneath a heavy resinous hop bitterness. Coffee bitterness and astringency in the finish with some residual hoppiness, some alcohol heat as well. Mouthfeel is fairly heavy, rather dry.

Sampled on-tap. Pours pitch black with a lasting dark tan head. Rich malts on the nose. Flavor is extremely robust with heavy malts. Thick coffee grinds there as well. The aftertaste really lasts on this one. Feel is thick on the liquid and good with the carbonation. I seem to recall Kai at the Wine Gallery in Boston telling me I really needed to try this on tap. Well thank you Kai. This beer is tasty!

Completely black body with a head that looks like rusty steel wool. Very sweet orange and chocolate aroma. Thick taste. Dark chocolate flavor with an orange peel-like finish. A little warming but no alcohol taste. Reminds me of a dessert I used to enjoy as a kid...chocolate cocoa covered orange peels.

Bottle. Roasty aroma with some sweet fruitiness and some hoppy citrus. Black body, large thick creamy brown head. Flavor is heavy with ripe fruit and roasted malt, along with a dose of chocolatey sweetness and undergirding citrus. A bit of bitterness in the finish. Overall, I find this brew quite similar to Old Rasputin (and that is certainly a very good thing), but with much more citrus in the profile. Delicious.

Wow, I’m surprised to see this at only 7% ABV, because it sure tasted like there was more. Great aroma and look, but a little too much alcohol bite. Overall, loved it.
