Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Nice off-white head. Not as chocolate brown as I was hoping for, but a very good looking beer. Found this one at the Buford Highway Greens. This one has a nice pungent alcohol aroma. The alcohol could have been well hidden, but I do not mind the presence. A different kind of aroma. Nice creamy palate with a noticeable sharp pungent taste. I taste the coffee, but the hops dominate. A great twist on the stout, and I just tried a different stout that had the same characterisitics. This beer has a nice wood taste as well. Overall, awesome stout.

This guy is strange. The first thing that hits the nose is hops, lots and lots of hops. Grassy, earthy, spicy hops. Unusual for this style, notable for aromas of roasted coffee and chocolate. The appearance is true to the style, dark brown, opaque, small tan head. The flavor is very hoppy as well. The flavor is spicy hops, some roated coffee. Very bitter tasting. This reminds me more of an "India Brown Ale" than a stout. The finish is astringent, lingering bitter hops, grass. The mouthfeel is very good, thick and creamy. Decent stout overall, not my favorite. I think perhaps this beer needs aging before consuming.

Pours a nice dark color. Smell of coffee and to my surprise, an overpowering amount of hops. Taste of chocolate, caramel, roasted coffee, a heavy amount of hops and bitter at the end. Wow! I can’t belive the smell of hops in this stout. Its most I smelled in a stout yet. Its not a bad thing, it’s a good thing. Me likey, me likey a lot!

Bottle thanks to artusory. Poured a thick black color with a nice, full tan head. Aroma of chocolate, a hint of caramel, and a decent hop appearance. Smooth, rich chocolate flavor with undertones of caramel, a nice balance of hops, and a rich coffee flavor on the finish. Nice and thick, but not cloying. Really good beer. Thanks Ryan, good stuff.

Rich, oily aroma has an overtone of molasses and an undertone of fine roast coffee with a hint of unsweetened chocolate. It pours a dark, nearly opaque sable with a very thick, fine-bubbled, persistent tan head. Flavor is a little smoky, strongly of molasses with nutty, coffee, chocolate and toffee hints. Texture is thick, smooth and fizzy with a good alcohol bite. Definitely lip-smacking.

This beer opens up into an orange/citrus hoppy RIS which compliments the more subdued oakiness and dark fruits soaked in cocoa. An interesting aroma for a RIS to say the least. Pours completely opaque with a caramel head. A significant amount of hop bittering with dry, chewy caramel, with subtle hints of a fruity ester. Finish is hoppy bitterness and cocoa. Overall this is a really hoppy imperial stout with a nice citrus finish. Smooth, creamy, resiny. Blind Imperial Stout tasting ---re-rate may be necessary---

Pitch black pour with 1 finger lingering tan head. Intense aromatics in the form of the hop- dominated by pine and citrus. Hops were also quite evident in the flavor- too much so. This is quite over hopped, but somehow still managed to be delicious. Excellent smooth malty backbone, but eclipsed by hops. Oily rich and thick mouthfeel with awesome lingering hoppy aftertaste. This would be incredible after a year or two of cellering, which is exactly what I plan to do.

A strong Imperial Stout that packs a punch. Little to no head, dark motor oil color. Not overly sweet and this is slightly stronger than I expected. Its been a while since I have had an impy, so it was a big beer to have. A solid impy stout, but I think this might need to be shared.
