Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Pours black with a small, dark head. Very hoppy aroma, reminiscent of Legend’s Imperial. The grassiness and pine is backed by molasses, toast, and a burnt metallic character. Begins with a smooth dark malt flavor and ends on hops and espresso. Bitter espresso aftertaste. The hops really blend well with the bitterness from the roasted malt. The espresso flavor is a bit too metallic, but a good beer overall.

Another superb offering from Smuttynose’s Big Beer Series. BTW- picked these up at Somerville Supersaver, NJ for $3.99/22 oz.’er which is a great deal. Pours thick, jet-black and opaque. Produces a thin, wispy tan head. Unique aroma combination of the dark, roasted malts and the Centennial and Cascade hops. A mixture of espresso, dark chocolate, pine and citrus fill the nose. Big thick chewy mouthfeel which is accentuated by the minimal carbonation level. Delicious flavors of bittersweet chocolate, espresso bean and burnt malt successfully married with the piney/citrusy hop flavors. All of this is nicely amped up by the alcohol level. Finish is a pleasant bitter-sweet send-off. Great stuff here!!

22oz bomber thanks to Sparky27. Pours dark brown into black with beautiful brown head. Smell is of chocolate, alcohol and some hops and chemical I can’t name. Taste is of cocoa powder. Mouthfeel is medium-to-thick and dry with some hop bitterness.

Ebony black with an initially thick tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma of coffee, cocoa, oats and light hops. Body is full and smooth with a low carbonation and a slight syrup feel. Flavor is of cocoa, espresso, bitter chocolate and roasted oats. A bit of a dry finish and not as sweet as some of my favorite Imperial Stouts. Has a lingering bitterness that I could do without. Overall a good brew but I prefer the sweeter higher abv Imperials.

Thanks to jjpm79 for the bottle!
Black with a large tan head, lots of sea foam remaining. Nose is very hoppy, some fruit and roast coming along. Flavor mirrors this, more syrupy alcohol and chocolate than the nose, but the hops are still quite dominant. Heavy and thick, the hops offer some balance and keep it afloat, though perhaps my largest complaint is how short the flavor is. In the long run, too much hop for an IS (for me), but it definitely provides for a unique and overall very good beer.

Bottle. Opaque espresso/black color with an awesome beige colored head, nice lacing and decent retention. Aroma is malty and hoppy, soapy, earthy, slight coffee notes, alcohol, bitter chocolate, nutty (hazelnut?). Great flavor, smooth and balanced. Bitter chocolate, cherries, coffee, alcohol, malts, smoky, dry finish. Awesome. Nice on the palate, smooth and dry, warming, nice carbonation. This is a great beer, easily smuttynose’s best, and under-rated in my opnion.
