Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Bottle. Thanks alot Jason (Kramer17801) for this one. Pours a black color with a tan head. Sweet malty slightly roasted aroma with hoppy hints. There are also some hints of chocolate in the aroma. Sweet malty roasted flavor with hints of hops, chocolate and coffee. Swet malty finish with a hoppy bitter aftertaste.

Bottle shared at local BA gathering. Poured dark brown color with a moderate frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate roasted malt, chocolate and small alcohol aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy roasted sweet flavor with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate to long duration. Another standout brew.

Black with a lasting tan head. Aroma of licorice, with strong citrus hop notes. Sweet and roasted flavour with warming alcohol, and a hoppy and bitter finish.

I have alwys been a fan of Smutty beers, and smutty women...This oe pours dark brown with a deep tan head. Aroma of big malt, chocoff, dark fruit. Tastes malty, with huge chocoff, dark fruit, slight oats and nuts. Smooth, firm palate, and a ballsy finish. This impy stout is awesome, and is only superseded by the big names of Speedway, Stone, Yeti, and my own discovery, Central Waters. This one kicks ass and takes names.

A deep dark stout with a thin moka head. Pleasant chocolate aroma, with vinous notes, alcohol, prunes, very noice and complex. In mouth, a good coffee moka with bitter chocolate, prunes, alcohol in finale, very warming. This can be described as chewy. A quality beer from Smuttynose!

Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing. Body is black (opaque). Aroma is moderately malty (roasted/burnt grain, chocolate), lightly to moderately hoppy (resin), with a note of alcohol. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly to moderately acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. Pretty uninteresting.

Pours black of course, seemed thicker to me than many comments indicated. Little ring of foam left after the small dark brown head dies. Roasted grain the most prominent aroma at first, some chocolate appears eventually, along with gin/juniper berries; nice but not as strong as I might hope from an Imperial. Very robust, almost raw flavor, definitely low on the sweetness though there is a fine undercurrent of milk chocolate lurking. Very hoppy, bitter conclusion, with hints of aluminum. Body OK, thin for an Imperial perhaps but not bad. On the whole, just OK, especially with all the great Imperials out there.

Bomber from Josh. Not a member, I think. But I’m working on that. BC in 2009. It is at least 3 months old. Pours very black with a huge foamy tan head. Very strong aromas of toasted malt, anise, chocolate, coffee? Full bodied with smooth carbonation. There’s a strong brown candy/treacle component. Plus dark malt, lots of chocolate, possibly coffee. There’s some nice hop bitter, arguably citrus. This is very flavorful. Arguably well balanced. Yummy.
