Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Ebony black with an initially thick tan head that dissipates quickly. Aroma of coffee, cocoa, oats and light hops. Body is full and smooth with a low carbonation and a slight syrup feel. Flavor is of cocoa, espresso, bitter chocolate and roasted oats. A bit of a dry finish and not as sweet as some of my favorite Imperial Stouts. Has a lingering bitterness that I could do without. Overall a good brew but I prefer the sweeter higher abv Imperials.

Bottle. Opaque espresso/black color with an awesome beige colored head, nice lacing and decent retention. Aroma is malty and hoppy, soapy, earthy, slight coffee notes, alcohol, bitter chocolate, nutty (hazelnut?). Great flavor, smooth and balanced. Bitter chocolate, cherries, coffee, alcohol, malts, smoky, dry finish. Awesome. Nice on the palate, smooth and dry, warming, nice carbonation. This is a great beer, easily smuttynose’s best, and under-rated in my opnion.

22oz bottle via trade with MrBendo. Aroma: Rich chocolate, roasted malt, anise, coffee, cream, and dark fruits. Definitely some hops in here, too. Pine and citrus come through loud and clear. Appearance: Black with no highlights. Dark tan head was full and creamy with decent retention. Good lacing. Flavor: Chocolate, coffee, dark fruits, cream, light smoke and anise. Again, the hops come through fairly strong with pine and citrus. Grains and hops meld together well. Medium high bitterness. Some lingering sweetness and grain after the finish. Palate: Full bodied and creamy. Moderate carbonation. Alcohol warming all over tongue. Overall: Solid imperial stout. Good play between malt flavors and hops. Really enjoyed it.

Bottle. Pours pitch black with a dense and creamy cappuccino coloured head. Fruity aromas with notes of spruce, roasted malt and licorice. Smooth texture. Flavours of licorice, chocolate, coffee and a hoppy finish. Super delicious. Very drinkable.

Poured dark, black and thick. Smells like citrus hops, malt, and mustiness. Taste has coffee and chocolate near the end with a slightly hoppy and bitter finsih. This was a good imperial, not a superb one though. There’s a lot of great IS’s out there to compete with and this just cant.

Bottle. Black with small tan head. Aroma of berry, chocolate, coffee. A very smooth and mellow imperial stout, still potent, very drinkable. Rich dark chocolate flavor, alcohol stood out a bit too much, overall improved as it warmed. Another good Smuttynose brew.

From the 1 pint 6 fl. oz (US) Big Beer series. 2008 edition. Beautiful ebony pour with a somewhat brownish-red head, that doesn’t last terribly long. Overall the entire body of the beer is brown-almost black. Aroma is strong and of cocoa, chocolates, and hops. Powerful element of hops in the taste too with the chocolate almost taking a back seat. I am more of a cream stout fan than an Imperiial Stout because Imperials are a bit overwhelming for me. Imperial fans should love this one though. There are a lot of ratings so it must be more widely available.
