Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

#23 of my Stouts of November: Black hue with good creamy light brown hue and good lacing. Aroma hinted of semi-sweet chocolate, raisin, nutty malts, molasses, coffee, aromatic and piney hops, soapy yeast esters. Moderately sweet with okay balance of bitterness. The finish is what was interesting about this brew. Licorice twang and a piney touch was to be found on top of the maltyness. Kept this from becoming too one-diminsional. Sticky and oily mouthfeel, but a touch thin. The alcohol was was hidden. Very nice Imperial, well balanced and quaffable.

Bottle at home ... From my GBBF haul i think... if it was a trade i appologise and please put me right ... deep black ... thin tan lacing ... big sweet meaty roast malt ... little chocolate nose ... again sweet with a big resiny pine hop front ... lovely solid chocolate malt roast background ... lovley ... soft mouthfeel ... a sipper but delightful.. even if again its a bit hop heavy for me tastes.

Bomber, thanks to HogTownHarry! Poured very deep brown.. almost black with a lovely initial cap of deep brown head.. receded to a dusting and ring after a couple minutes. Aroma was chock fulla deep, roasty malt goodness.. dark chocolate at the helm with some coffee as well.. hefty pine presence comes through with warmth and the alcohol presence enhances the good smells.

Flavor was on the sweeter side with deep-roasted chocolate and coffee and pine bitterness.. alcohol was never subtle, nor was it overt. Medium-bodied with very nice balance to it.. left a long, warm roasty chocolate finish. Really enjoyed this!

An excellent RIS, with a good thickness in mouthfeel, black body and substantial head. Aroma coffee-chocolate, with C-hop. Aged about a year so mellowness therefore the hops make their presence but do not detract from the drinking experience. Nicely malted chocolate, with roast also in the secondary. Maybe not the best RIS ever, but damn good and will have again.

Bottle (650ml). Shared with blankboy, tupalev and Dave B - blankboy’s bottle. Impenetrable black with a large lasting brown creamy-foamy head. Rich aroma - full resiny green hops, rich molasses and chocolate overroast malt, spicy, resonated with my sniffer - it’s tingling. Taste is very bitter - there’s dark molasses malt, quite a bit of alcohol, smooth finish but a touch boozy for 7%. Creamy body, a little thin, bitter finish - very very good.

2008-04-11. Blackbody with a good sized brown head that fades fast. (3+) Nice aroma has a healthy portion of alcohol without being too hot, mildly roasted malt, tiny hints of dark fruit. (7+) Light coffee notes, mocha hints, light bitterness throghout. A smooth coffee roast comes out a lot more after it warms up (7+) Smooth medium palate has relatively low carbonation, but it seems to serve the beer well. (3+) Rather nice. 7/3/8/3/16 – 3.6 2006 Vintage bottle courtesy of HogTownHarry shared with Mabel and DuctTape. <P>May 2004. Nice looking beer, with a big roasty coffee like aromas and flavours. Nice body, and a fair bit of bitterness in this one. Interesting. 8/4/6/4/14 - 3.6
