Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, tupalev & Dave B. -- my bottle courtesy of Thaichile. Pours a deep dark brown with a good size semi-lasting creamy light-brown head. Fantastic aroma is big time resiny hops with dark malt, chocolate and hints of fruit -- man that smells good! The malty roastness comes out more in the flavour along with tons of hops, some fruit, coffee and some alcohol (the alcohol’s present but it doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the beer at all). Nice full body and creamy mouthfeel. An awesome Stout, exactly how I like it, with tons of hops -- must get more!

2003 bottle. Aroma of chocolate, sherry, coffee and hops. Taste is somewhat smooth with the above flavors predominant along with vanilla and tart grapefruit. Medium bodied with a smooth mouthfeel.

Thanks go out to BBB63 for sharing this with thedm and I at his place. When poured, the head was small sized, light brown, smooth and contained fine-small bubbles that completely dissipated. The body was uncarbonated, opaque and black in hue. The nose consisted of malts, mild coffee, chocolate and some molasses. The flavor was that of mild coffee, malt and if I'm not mistaken some notes of licorice. The palate was very smooth, somewhat thin and a bit oily. I definitely recommend this particular Imperial Stout.

Pitch black with a chocolaty colored foam head. Nose is rich coffee and dark chocolate. Enticing! WOW! Thick chewy chocolate and coffee body. VERY tasty! I can’t think of a better way to end a messed up day. A bit of an oily mouthfeel and some coffee bitterness during the finish, but this is GOOD!

2006 Vintage Opaque blackness with a small tan head. Nose is hoppy and slightly citric with lots of coffee, roasted malt, and dark, bittersweet chocolate. Taste is dark fruits, piney hops, melon, coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts, and slightly burnt chocolate chip cookies. Body is creamy and smooth with mild carbonation notes and medium-full overall feel. Finishes with more hop notes, light pine, melon, plums, coffee, dark chocolate and chocolate cake.

Savannah, Ga. - Habersham Beverage Warehouse - 22 oz bomber. Coal black pour with a thick mocha colored head that leaves excellent lacing. Aroma of vanilla, chocolate, and a wee bit of alcohol. Flavor is full if chocolate, has some marshmallow notes, a hint of bourbon and some vanilla to round it out. Excellent roastiness - espresso-like. Rich, creamy mouthfeel. Me like!

Draft at Sunset Grill. Poured a dark dark brown color with thin ruddy highlights and a tan head. Attractive aroma of flowery hops, pine, citrus, and roasty malt. Medium to full bodied with mild roasty bitterness and a dash of salt. The combination of pine and alcohol create an almost gin-like note that is accompanied by chocolate, minimal soy, and flower blossom. Nice hoppy imperial stout.

2006 Vintage Bomber, likely via trade a ways back. Poured into my reidel snifter. Pours black with a thin light brown head. Nose is sweet with big roasted malts. Taste is sweet, with big punching coffee and a lot deep malts with some bitterness. Overall pretty damn tasty.
