Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

22oz bottle. Pours jet black with a creamy tan head. Tons of licorice, black fruits, coffee, and cocoa on the nose, light booze. The profile is dominate with coffee followed by black licorice and bittersweet chocolate. Good mouth feel and nice carbonation. A damn good Impy Stout.

Pours a nice dark color. Smell of coffee and to my surprise, an overpowering amount of hops. Taste of chocolate, caramel, roasted coffee, a heavy amount of hops and bitter at the end. Wow! I can’t belive the smell of hops in this stout. Its most I smelled in a stout yet. Its not a bad thing, it’s a good thing. Me likey, me likey a lot!

Courtesy of tpd975. Pours deep darkness with thin mocha head. The aroma is dark roastiness with some dark fruity esters, mild burnt malts and some toffee. The nose really gets nicer as it warms. The taste is dark roastiness, some burnt malts, dark chocolate and some sense of alcohol. Sweet roasty and decadent. This is real yummy.

Bomber shared with after4ever. Pours an opaque blackish brown with a lacy tan head. Coffee, chocolate and and pine/floral hops on the nose. Full body with moderate carbonation. The taste sweet with coffee, chocolate an dark fruit. The finish is bittersweet with the hop and smoky espresso coming through the roasty malt.

2006 bomber. Pours dark, with a medium off-white head. Typical impy stout looking. Nose is definitely NOT typical, with mega-hops, roastiness, and chocolate. Flavor is chocolate, with coffee, and finishes with hops. Tastes a bit similar to the Stone IRS. Has a bit of a fizzy, oily mouthfeel. It has such a unique flavor that I know I’m going to need to have it again.

An outstanding production by the folks up at Smutty, perhaps their best beer. Sure, I like Smutty, but this exceeded expectations. It was actually darned predictable, just like the bottle says: chocolate, coffee, dry fruits, and hoppy. The hops were bold (somewhat pine-like) and assertive, but not overdone. Two thumbs up on this one, smooth and creamy, very nice.

Pours black with dark khaki head. Very roasty aroma, almost smokey, and lots of coffee/espresso. Not sure when my bottle was from, but was not overly hoppy. Very smooth chocolate and coffee flavors with a smokey finish. Alcohol is very well hidden. Definitely my favorite from smuttynose so far.
