Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Sampled on-tap. Pours pitch black with a lasting dark tan head. Rich malts on the nose. Flavor is extremely robust with heavy malts. Thick coffee grinds there as well. The aftertaste really lasts on this one. Feel is thick on the liquid and good with the carbonation. I seem to recall Kai at the Wine Gallery in Boston telling me I really needed to try this on tap. Well thank you Kai. This beer is tasty!

WOW!!!! My brain is in overload. Is this an Imperial Stout or is it a Black DIPA? You decide. Either way it’s an awesome beer.

Many thanks to Hogtownharry for the bottle! Pours an inky, oily black with a small deep brown head. Holy smokes, I could smell this thing a foot away as soon as I popped the top! Licorice, dark toffee, cereal, and molasses. Wow, no complaints about the taste. Bitter resinous hops and tarry, black, thick malt. Plenty of licorice flavour - nice! Dark, fruity, smoky aftertaste lingers as beer warms. Strong alco burn. Thick creamy body with decent carb. What a treat!

This beer met and exceeded my expectations. It poured a thick oily black of the likes of world class brews such as Ten Fidy and Expedition, and while the beer had a full body and complex flavours, it had better drinkability than the big stouts I have tried. I am suprised this is not world class rated. Chunks of brown goo float around the bottle and the beer stains your glass dark brown after every sip you take. This was one heck of a pleasant surprise, and that’s coming in with super high expectations.

Dark, thick, and viscous. Has a light tan head that lasts nicely. Nose of dark fruit and very nice hops, lots of coffee bitterness. Flavor-wise, wonderfully bitter, great coffee and burnt charcoal roasts. Slightly sour and quite powerful, has a good burn to it. Rich and syrupy, really, really nice. I’m generally sick of imperial stouts, but this could restore my faith in the style.

This is a good one. A dark tan, tight head tops the black, opaque brew. A rich deep taste, not too bitter, not too sweet. Just right. As the aftertaste fades I am driven, addict like, to a second mouthful. It wasn't till the second pouring,it's in a 1 pint, 6 oz. bottle, that I noticed and admired the lace pattern left by the head. A strong, malty brew with lots of chocolate. I'll go back for more of this. A true meal in a glass.

Bottle. Poured a blackish-brown color with a medium brown head. Good lacing. Aroma is very pleasant, consisting of vanilla, coffee, and chocolate milk. Mouthfeel is very nice and full. Flavor is very nice, with a strong dark chocolate presence and hints of vanilla, bourbon, and coffee. Thanks to TimmyK77 for the bottle.

Bomber->snifter: Pours an average, rocky, brown head that exhibits spare lacing atop a black body. Aroma of perfume and herbs. The body is medium with soft carbonation, finishing astringently. The flavor’s duration is average, being moderately sweet and bitter. I really enjoyed this beer--I like the high ABV and the aroma and taste profile.
