Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Light chocolate smoke over rich roastiness on a bed of slightly burned leaves…A great mouthfeel, a mouthful of a goddess’ hips…Another Smuttynose success...

Pitch black with a chocolaty colored foam head. Nose is rich coffee and dark chocolate. Enticing! WOW! Thick chewy chocolate and coffee body. VERY tasty! I can’t think of a better way to end a messed up day. A bit of an oily mouthfeel and some coffee bitterness during the finish, but this is GOOD!

2006 Vintage Opaque blackness with a small tan head. Nose is hoppy and slightly citric with lots of coffee, roasted malt, and dark, bittersweet chocolate. Taste is dark fruits, piney hops, melon, coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malts, and slightly burnt chocolate chip cookies. Body is creamy and smooth with mild carbonation notes and medium-full overall feel. Finishes with more hop notes, light pine, melon, plums, coffee, dark chocolate and chocolate cake.

This Imperial stout pours with a black body topped by a medium thick head with some lacing. The aroma is slightly sweet yet bitter with a note of licorice, a touch of coffee and a little roastiness. The flavor is slightly sweet yet bitter and hoppy with a touch of coffee, a very slight rostiness and some licorice. Full bodied, smooth and a touch tingly.

Bottle. Deep dark brown in color with a tan head. Roasty aroma, and flavor. Chocolately. Caramel notes. Well balanced. Full bodied. Decent beer.

Rich black color, tan head. Smell is of dark fruits ( raisons, prunes and maybe figs) bittersweet chocolate, coffee, liqorice, pipe tobacco and spices. The taste is prunes, raisons and chocolate covered cherries. Hops are evident, but not obstrusive and the brew finishes with a soothing alcohol warmth. Kind of mild for an Imperial but tasty.

This was surprisingly good. I don’t love Smutty, but their big bottle series ranges from good to great, and this one is maybe the best I’ve had so far. Pours a flat opaque black with no head, just a little discoloration on the top of the glass, and leaves no real lacing. Flat in the mouth, but full and round ... like a stout. Nose is never my favorite part of a beer, but this one is sweet malts and hops. I really enjoy the flavor ... intense and complex ... coffee, espresso, bitter hops, sweet toffee, and burnt malt, with a long, long bitter finish.

Very similar to Great Divide Yeti but with a thinner mouthfeel. Love the hops and ample coffee roastiness with a hint of licorice. I wish it were a bit thicker.
