Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

22oz bottle. Black with tan head. Nose of dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, and some faint piney hops in the background. Flavor follows, chocolate-sweet but with a nice bitter hoppiness to tone it down. Smooth, full mouthfeel. Quite tasty overall, but I found myself wishing for more hop bitterness throughout.. But hey, I ain’t complainin’.

Bomber consumed outside in the 18 degree weather. The pour is solid for an impy, jet black with a tall dark tan head. When the snifter is held to the light, a bit of ruby hues are apparent perhaps. The aroma highlights a distinct hoppiness and a wash of espresso and mocha. It’s thick, not uber thick, but dense enough to compete with any reasonable brew in the style. Birch, soy sauce, tree bark, espresso, earth, and caramel are in the mix of rich flavors. Great beer, well done, I would some it up as a tamer Yeti Stout.

Hey! Alright! A nice stout. Not too overwhelming. This could almost be an "all day" kinda of brew for me. Just slightly overwhelming, but I expected that. Great hop follow up mixed in with the dark notes. Bravo! Nice beer.

22 oz. Aroma is dark chocolates, coffee, and roasted malt. Flavor is a slightly bittersweet chocolate, with coffee notes and a lot of roasted flavors. It is quite smooth and is very rich. There are many Imperials I probably wouldn’t drink often, but this one was superb. Alcohol is masked very well.

Bottle. Pours heavy, like old motor oil, with a slowly developing dark head. From two feet away, the aroma is overwhelming. Sweet, malty, sharp and bitter all in one. Heavy and bitter. More bitter than expected. While the alcohol is evident in the mouth, the taste and aroma is not noticeable. Aged for a at least half a year.

Bottle... Poured black with a brown head. Buttery sweet boozy aroma with a pleasant nutty, grain character. A nice, alcohol flavor with a coffee/chocolate, roasted malt character. A nice conflicting, but also balancing bitter/sweet thing going on with this beer. I’d compare it to Lost Abbey Serpents Stout, which is a great beer to be among and cost more the half the price of a Serpents Stout.

Bottle courtesy tpd975. Pours black with a one finger mostly lasting tan head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of chocolate, dark fruit, coffee, and sweet caramel. Taste is the same as aroma. Medium mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and smooth alcohol. Very good.

From the Jug at the GABF, Colorado Convention Center 11/10/2007 Coffee roast aroma. Small beige head. Black strong in alcohol and fruity with a crisp and bitter chocolate roast finish.
