Roasted malt aroma with coffe, fruit, dark chocolate and a hint of alcohol. Full body. Flavor is very strongly roasted, but with nice notes of smoke and coffee. Like all of these Smutty beer’s. very nice, and very affordable. TearsforBeers (173), Ohio, USA

The aroma is wonderful - some kind of amazing chocolaty malty soy sauce dominates. The flavor is different - less soy sauce and more chocolate, coffee, roasted malts, and maybe a wee presence of hops. The palate is pretty good, moderately thick and warming. Overall, this is a very fine brew that I would be happy to drink regularly. TheGent (163), , Massachusetts, USA

Not so with this big bottle offering. My tasteing was a tug of war between sweet malt and spicey hops. With one sip i was grabbed by the toffee almost corn syrup sweetness. But with the nest the stinging hop spice was all i seemed to notice. And so it went back and forth with every sip. Adding the stunning dark body and thin tan head along with a light enough palate that made it so I didn’t feel weighed down after finshing this alone makes this a great beer. beerandIT (190), Richmond, Virginia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jul 28, 2009 Pours a very dark almost black with a small amount of head that leaves the scene rather quickly. Full bodied beer. On the nose I get chocolate mixed with coffee almost like a fifty fifty combination. Also some caramel and toffee in there along with subtle roasted malts. The aroma is very telling of what you are finding on the palate almost deadly accurate. I get chocolate with traces of the coffee in there as well. They are intermingled very well in the palate. I also get sweet roasted malts in there, nuances of toffee and a slight alcohol burn. I think the fact I can taste the alcohol is because this is a fresh vintage. Definitely recommend this one as the price is under 7 dollars here. williamherbert (475), Syracuse, New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 6, 2009 Pitch black like a pot of coffee. Large cardboard brown head. The head becomes a chunky film that sits atop. Looks like chocolate milk from above. Pure motor oil.
Ok the smell: 1) Alcohol blast; 2) Thick and ballsy quasi-barleywine aroma; 3) Burnt malts; 4) A slight citrusy hop. A huge, intense aroma. Half-amazing, half-intimidating.
The taste is a big blast of alcohol. A seriously burnt malt, like charred cookies. Mild sweet raisin. Strong and brutal. As it warms, some citrusy hops, but completely overwhelmed by charred malt.
The feel is chewy, creamy and a little oily. Maybe the most burnt beer I’ve ever had in my life. Pitch black. One and done for me. Tastes quite good, but in an extreme way. Best from a snifter. Oakes (8115), Kowloon, Hong Kong

Very hoppy palate, with lots of roast and coffee notes. Two-dimensional but I do like the flavours. Volgon (2490), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA

Deep dark fruit/wine character developing. Still, an Imperial Stout with 7.1% isn't going to be able to compete with the big boys. 11/27/01: It is a rather mellow Imperial Stout. This creamy black liquid goes down smooth and warms you up. After factoring in the alcohol content, price and approaching winter, I realized that I must buy every bottle in New Hampshire. | 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 17, 2003 Nice and thick auburn brown liquid that clung to the sides of the glass underneath a deep brown, frothy and short-lived head. Aromas of coffee, chocolate and roasted malt. Bitter coffee and chocolate flavors are predominate with some prune, raisin and date flavors showing as the beer warms. No apparent alcohol flavors or aromas. Cettainly the malty flavors dominate over the lightly perceived hops. Finishes sweet with a long aftertaste. Maybe I enjoyed this more than I should've considering I haven't had a really nice, big beer in a couple of weeks. Enjoyable.
