Commercial Description:
After a one year hiatus the Imperial Stout is back in action. We figured that after catching a bit of flack for its absence we’d have it return with a bang. We bumped up the starting gravity from 20° P to 24° P. This allowed the beer to finish just over 10% ABV. Like this year’s Barleywine, we’ve decided to play with the hop character, specifically the dry hop presence. Trying to avoid the fiasco of my previous attempt at adding pellets to the fermentor, I did what any good manager would do: I made Charlie add them. He had the advantage of being able to add the hops directly through a top manway and so his besting me in this challenge is not necessarily a sign of his superior brewing skills but more a reflection of my adventurous, try anything spirit (or at least that’s the story I’m stickin’ to). The Charles added 44 lbs of Cascade, split evenly between two batches, or about half a pound per barrel. We then transferred the beer onto seventy-eight pounds of an even mixture of Centennial and Columbus whole flowers, about one pound per barrel. The beer is a little top heavy in terms of the hopping but it seems to be smoothing out a bit as it’s aging. I’d give it six months or so, if you can wait that long. If not, hey, enjoy it anyway.

Rich, oily aroma has an overtone of molasses and an undertone of fine roast coffee with a hint of unsweetened chocolate. It pours a dark, nearly opaque sable with a very thick, fine-bubbled, persistent tan head. Flavor is a little smoky, strongly of molasses with nutty, coffee, chocolate and toffee hints. Texture is thick, smooth and fizzy with a good alcohol bite. Definitely lip-smacking.

Draught. Thick, black ruddy, small head. Aroma is very complex. Roast malt, caramel, tofee, chocolate, hint of smoke. Interesting and pleasant. Sweet but not cloying, good amount of bitterness, bit of astringency. Flavors come out as it warms, some borbon and vanilla extract flavors. Good stuff.

22oz bomber Bottle Conditioned in 2006 from jah noth, thank you Dan! Sits black with a half finger brown head. Aroma still has a pretty good piney hop presence in part that it’s still pretty young--fresh Gonzo Imperial Porter comes to mind. It’s a nice sweet pine aroma--I really like it. A lot of roast, milk and dark chocolate, coffee, juicy raisins, a little vinous quality. Some salted peanuts are also in there. Flavor is piney and salty up front with roasted malts plow their way through the palate next, staying til the end. Some sweet raisins come towards the end and the dark chocolate is just before the finish. Semidry mildly bitter roasty finish. Alcohol is covered up exceptionally well. Full bodied, yet not syrupy with soft creamy carbonation and mouthfeel. Excellent.

Bar-none, best imperial stout I’ve had. Best stout I’ve had for that matter. I’m knew at this tasting thing, but I just counted and I’ve got at least 5 stouts under my belt, including Rogue’s Shakespeare and Chocolate Stout. This certainly bests NorthWest Brewery’s Old Rasputin Impy. It’s just so smooth. I expect that malty bite but it never comes. Beautifully done. Reaffirms my faith in Smuttnose. Keep it up.

Huge thanks to Immy for this fantastic beer! This one surprised the hell out of me. pitch black with a dark brown head. classic impy stout look. aroma loads of floral hops......lots of em....but nice espresso heavy mocha undertones with a hint of soy sauce round out the aroma. nice balanced sweet bitter salty mocha soy sauce floral flavor with a nice dose of spicy alcohol. bittersweet salty floral finish...with some warm alcohol. full and thick....great body. classic very solid impy stout.very nice balance. very well done. I love imperial stouts and smuttynose does a good job.....but for some reason when i opened this one i expected a sub par imperial stout.....and what i got was something i need to taste side by side with bells expedition. again thanks tim! this is a great one! i need more!

22oz bottle: Hoppy nose rounded off by some dark chocolate and rich cocoa. A first class body with a silky richness and smooth tingle on the tongue. The flavor is sparked by hops but subdued by the mellow warm choco-coffee malt. Excellent! This stout is full in every respect. I want more of this.

I’m new to rating beer but I share the bias of most subscribers to this site. I prefer stouts and porters, strong beers in general. I’m not yet up on the lingo and my sense of smell is not real good. The only thing I did not like is the "piney" taste of I suppose for the other reviews is the hops. I would buy this beer again.
