Commercial Description:
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Bottle. Pours a coppery amber with a medium-sized head and weak aromas... seriously not much going on in the nose. Flavor is a decent enough mix of grapefruit and caramel malt, but lacks a little oomph. Seems unidirectional and not very complex.

Cask Stillage at the GBBF Bar Sans Frontiers Earl’s Court, London 08/08/2007 Fruity pine aroma. Golden coloured very hoppy and fruity pineapple with a crisp slightly woody bitter finish.

65 IBUs as rated by the brewer seem a bit under rated. Also, my bottle is pretty clear, but it has been sitting for 5 months in the fridge. Maybe it’s settled out. Overall though, it’s a good grapefruity type IPA.

Strong, skunky smell. Amber colour. Watery start with a decently bitter end. Okay.

Based on the Aroma I would expect this beer to be full of flavor and bitter with a hint of fruit on the finish but I found it to be a little lacking in body and flavor....

Bottle. Amber beer with a light cream head. Hoppy aroma with light malt. Grapefruit and light pine flavor with caramel. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Pine resin and grapefruit lingers with light malt.

Pour is slightly cloudy copper color with medium white head...a bit of a gusher actually. Aroma is not complicated: malt, pine hop, and yeast. Flavor is very similar to aroma, light malt, hops and a yeasty finish. Not quite all I was hoping for.

nice ipa but far from my favorite..maybe a little to much on the citrus grapefruit side for me, almost a little sourness coming through or maybe its these salty pretzels i’m eating..anyway it’s probably gonna be hard to pick this up again with Stone and Hopdevil sitting next to it, but you never know...
