Commercial Description:
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Rerate Much more flavorful the second time around - taste buds were numb last night Original 3.1 Tallahassee, Fl. - Liquor Loft - 12 oz bottle.Medium golden pour with a soft white head. Spicy aroma with a hint of spruce. Subtle bitter notes with a hint of citrus and not a whole lot else going on. Easy drinking and smooth but just not up to Smuttynose standards. Bought a six - so will see if it improves over the life of the sixer.

MY 125th IPA RATING. 12oz bottle, Variety Sampler Mixed 12pk. Hazy golden \ orange pour. White foamy head. Really nice lacing. Lots of citrus hops in the nose. A hint of cherry blossom. Flavor is a lot of sharp bitterness. Lots of hops. I love ’em. Medium bodied. Full flavored. Long lasting hop character. Not for the mild palate, HopHeads only. 27mar09

On tap at Raleigh World Beer Fest. Pours a clear gold with a thin, beige head. Very good lacing. Great aroma of floral hops, grapefruit, orange peel. Taste is citrus hops with white pepper and a touch of pine resin. Great creamy palate. This was a very nice surprise. An excellent IPA.

A bitter IPA with a nice hoppy feel. I expected a bit more malt, but overall this was a smooth IPA. Nice frothy head.

In short: A well malted and very hoppy IPA. Tasty, a bit harsh and very bitter. Very good.
How: Bottle 22oz. Consumed fresh a few weeks after purchase
The look: Clear golden body topped by a very small off-white head
In long: The highly hoppy nose has a bit of everything as far as American hops are concerned: citrus fruits, pine-tree, oranges, etc. The malts are a bit oily, moderately toasted and offer a strong caramel backbone. And the beer needs that full body because it is hoppy as hell. Hop profile is moderately resinous with flavours of citrus fruits, a lot of oranges and orange peels, pine needles, fress green grass, cedar. The beer has a medium-strong bitterness. The bitterness is rather harsh. This is not a refreshing IPA, this is a tasty and “rough” IPA. And it is really good at it what it wants to be. With so many IPAs that come and go the Smuttynose IPA has been a sure value for years. This is a solid IPA you can really take to the bank. Although these days it might be preferable to leave it under your pillow.

On tap at Rattle N Hum. Pours a golden color with a minimal off-white head. Smells faintly of pie spices as well as ornage and lemon zest. Tastes much the same with an added note of white pepper. A bit over-thought and underbalanced for my taste.

This is a solid IPA. Nice hop/citrus flavor. Medium body. Nothing extraordinary, but a solid pale ale
