Commercial Description:
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

From Smutty mixed pack. Pours slightly hazy orange. Small white head goes away almost immediately. Strong hop notes, pine citrus, wood in aroma. First taste is surprisingly sweet for IPA. Fairly balanced, but hop eventually wins over citrus and malt flavor. Bitterness sticks around a while after your done with this beer. Pretty tasty, and unthreatening for an IPA, but nothing mind-blowing.

Bottle. Pours hazy golden-orange with a one finger white head, and thick stripes all the way down the glass. . Aroma is bright citrus, grapefruit, and pine. Sweetness from the malt upfront is understated, citrusy hops come up big from the beginning, with a bitter, hoppy, piney finish that sneaks up on you but sticks around. Moderate carbonation, mouthfeel is spot on.

Bottle. Slightly hazy straw color with a nice big white head. Citrus nose. The flavor’s really citrusy up front with tons of lemons, grapefruit, and a bit of sourdough. As it goes down, the hops come forward and even a bit of pine. With less bitterness than many IPAs, it’s very refreshing for the style and a good one to keep around in warm weather.

12 oz bottle from a mixpack. Mostly clear orange copper with medium white head. Citrusy hop aroma with some carmelized malt. Piney citrusy grapefruit hop flavor with high hop bitterness. Medium mouthfeel with dry finish and lingering hop bitterness.

I think this might be the best single ipa that I have had from the east coast...thanks brewandbbq! great citrusy nose and actually hop forward in a good way...but in east coast style more balanced than a west coast style ipa....damn good though...glad I have a six pack...and glad that the label is so sweet!

Bottle, poured dark copper color with small head, but good lacing. I like this beer. Heavy carbonation, light malt and the right amount of hops that leave the lovely hop aftertaste (slightly citursy) that continues giving. Very drinkable, this would be a high class session beer.

Pours a bright hazy golden with hints of orange. Head is minimal but has a nice bubbly center that keeps the foam going throughout and leaves a really nice lacing. Big up front hoppy citrus smell of oranges and grapefruit. Slight malty sweetness in the background along with some resiny pine, but it’s mostly citrus hops in the nose. Taste follows the smell with big orange, grapefruit and lemon flavors with some grassy hints as well. I’m not getting as much sweetness in the taste as in the smell. Medium bodied with good carbonation leaves a little hoppy stickiness in the mouth. A decent American IPA. Very clean and crisp and especially nice on a hot afternoon.
