Commercial Description:
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Bottle: Golden with a nice, creamy off-white head. Lots of thick lacing. Aroma of light citrus and pine, plenty of malty sweetness. Tastes of pine and florals, light citrus and caramel sweetness. Dry hoppy finish. Enjoyed more as it warmed... Thanks Pepsican.

12oz Bottle. Pours golden yellow with a nice 2 finger lively head. Smell is resiny hops, sweet malt and grass. Taste is mellow with a light lemon peel, slight bitter hops and biscuit malt. Mouthfeel is thin and watery. Decent IPA and glad to have tried it.

Definitely not the Smuttynose best (check out the Brown Dog Ale). It has a beautiful golden brightness. This IPA doesn’t seem as strong as most, feels almost like a session beer.

Bottle pours a sediment ridden and hazy yellow gold with a small head and some lace. The aroma is grassy hops. The flavor is bitter, but not much in the way of malt for a backbone - perhaps some as it warms. The palate is sort of dry and carbnated with plain old water showing through. Perhaps past its prime, but after all the good IPA’s I’ve had lately, I’m having a hard time liking this.

Pours a golden color with a lot of particulate and a thin bubbly head. I never saw this much particulate in an IPA. Aroma is hops, biscuit, and a little bit skunky. The taste does not reflect the aroma, though. Taste is slightly citrus and grassy, with a slightly bitter finish.

Thanks to Adam for this one. Hazy yellow color with a tall head that leaves thick lacing on the glass as it fades. Lots of sediment specks are visibly suspended within. Aroma of grass and hay, maybe a touch of lemon and honey. Flavor has a very dry hop bitterness pretty much start to finish. Full bodied. It’s an ok IPA.

drink by 07/08. Pours gold with a thin white head. Aroma is biscuit and hops. Flavor is similar, way too biscuity. No citrus to back it up, not such a great hop character either. Finish is bitter, nice amount of carbonation. Not horrible but could use a lot of work.

Poured from the bottle to a bright reddish-orange with medium thick off-white head that lingered well and left okay lacing. Surprisingly, the nose was pretty muted, but the mounthfeel was the sharp, tangy citrus I expected. Taste was a very good, very pronounced hoppy grapefruit, all leading to a long, tangy and dry finish. A most enjoyable beer.
