Commercial Description:
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

12oz bottle - Poured hazey staw color with little head. Aroma is fresh floral hops. Initial taste is bitter with smooth finish. This beer has a different hop taste and I"m not sure I like it. I will try again and maybe rerate.

Poured a hazy orangey copper with a small white head and lots of seidment. Aroma is floral and citrus hops with some light bready malt in the background. Taste is dominated by hop bitterness. Very long bitter finish. Good IPA if you like hops, could be a double with a bit more alcohol.

Poured a hazy amber/orange with some sediment floating around. Aroma was very hoppy. The hops are very distinct in this IPA, giving it a crisp citrus flavor. The aftertaste is smooth and a bit sweet.

Bottle courtesy of kmweaver. Pours a hazy gold with a lot of fine sediment and a loose, frothy head. The head consists of large bubbles which create a crystalline pattern unlike any other I’ve seen before. Interesting but not necessarily appealing. The nose is fairly muted for an IPA, with citrus and earthy hops over a light, pale malt note. A funky "cat pee" Simcoe note detracts from the nose but fades a bit as the beer warms/airs out. The mouthfeel is classic "take another sip" IPA: light to medium-bodied and slick with a solid, lingering and tongue-squeezing bitterness at the finish which strips your tongue of moisture...prompting you to take another sip. The flavor is a well-balanced blend of sweet pale malt and citrus concluding with a satisfyingly bitter finish. This is a beer that will please any self-proclaimed hop head; a solid IPA that I wouldn’t hesitate to drink again. Thanks, Ken!

Draft at Flatbread Pizza in Old Port, Portland, Maine. Nice nose of floral hops, Simcoe’s not my favorite hop, but nice nonetheless. Pleasant body that backs up the hop bitterness. Would recommend.

bottle. pours an average golden color with a wonderful 2 finger white head... a nice 1/4" white head lasts throughout... very pleasant piney hop notes across the nose... well balanced between the hops and underlying malts. creamy medium body... thick bitter finish that smacks the palate with hops.

12oz Bottle: Picked this one up in the seediest Consumer’s Beverage in Buffalo, my party and I were seriously concerned for our safety. But, having left with this and Brooklyn Black Chocolate in hand I’d say the trip was worthwhile. This one pours deep orange in colour, nice foamy head, and hazy from an unfiltered bottling. The aroma is heavy in herbal hops and lemon, very inviting. The flavour is exceptional! Sweet and malty enough with an obvious punch of citrusy, herbal hops. I love this one! Not for the faint of heart, but if you can handle your hops, this is terrific.
