Commercial Description:
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

Dry-hopped cask version at the Blind Tiger. Aroma of some earthy malt, banana, floral hops, and grapefruit. The flavor was quite similar. Good mouthfeel on cask, and it seemed really fresh. It kind of tasted like a hopped up hefeweizen, but it was good.

Thanks jjpm74 Hazy darker golden pour, nice white head that stays. Aroma is biscuit and floral bigtime. Flavor is grapefruit very bitter like if it were the rinds. Lots of floral hop notes and a good amount of biscuit malt. A different approach at an IPA for sure because it is the most bitter grapefruit I’ve tasted in a beer but yet it’s still has a lot of crisp biscuit malt character to it. I just wish it didn’t taste like a grapefruit peel so much.

Bottle. Pours clear amber with a fluffy white head. Sweet citrus aroma. Lightly sweet bread and citrus taste. Bitter dry pine finish. Ends up being a bit soapy.

Orange pour with a moderate white head. The aroma is very citrusy and floral. Grapefruit, orange and hops predominate. The flavor is very in your face, especially the gapefruity hops. Bitter, bitter, bitter. This beer definitely bites you in the ass.

Amber color small white head. Aroma of sweaty perfume, citrus, and pine but bread/bisciut is somewhat noticeable and there is sllight alcohol in the nose as well. Hops are plentiful in the American style, but the hop flavor combination takes a cue from older IPA’s and ambers. Bitter ear wax dry finish. Medium body. 7/3/7/3/11 Rerate: More appreciation for the balance.

12 oz bottle with best before Sept 07 date. Pours cloudy orange amber with very little head. Lots of chunks of sediment in the bottle. Aroma is hoppy...citrus/orange and grass/vegetative and some spicier notes. Flavor is mostly hops and very bitter throughout, although a carmelly malt backbone comes through. Mouthfeel is medium; moderate carbonation. This had a very bitter hop profile but just didn’t taste fresh to me and I have to wonder if the bottle wasn’t past its prime (although the best by date would indicate that it was at least close).

Bottle from Capones. Amber color with white head. Fruity and hoppy aroma. Citrus prominent in both the smell and taste. Could drink these all day. A great beer.

Bottle from liquor store at Q/ct. Cloudy gold, thin white-ish head. Aroma is all hops: citrus, pine. Flavor, likewise: there is malt in this beer, but it takes a decidedly backseat to the piney, grapefruity hops. Very good
