Commercial Description:
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

12 oz bottle with best before Sept 07 date. Pours cloudy orange amber with very little head. Lots of chunks of sediment in the bottle. Aroma is hoppy...citrus/orange and grass/vegetative and some spicier notes. Flavor is mostly hops and very bitter throughout, although a carmelly malt backbone comes through. Mouthfeel is medium; moderate carbonation. This had a very bitter hop profile but just didn’t taste fresh to me and I have to wonder if the bottle wasn’t past its prime (although the best by date would indicate that it was at least close).

Bottle from Capones. Amber color with white head. Fruity and hoppy aroma. Citrus prominent in both the smell and taste. Could drink these all day. A great beer.

Bottle from liquor store at Q/ct. Cloudy gold, thin white-ish head. Aroma is all hops: citrus, pine. Flavor, likewise: there is malt in this beer, but it takes a decidedly backseat to the piney, grapefruity hops. Very good

Pours a cloudy amber, small head. Smell of citrusy hops. Piney taste with a citrus sting. Cool tingling effect on sides of tongue once swallowed.

On tap at C&O. Hazy pale gold with medium head. Floral and refreshing with a lasting bitterness. I often try to introduce my friends to HQ IPAs but this one lacks traction because of the the bitterness.

Easy IPA. Not too hoppy. A go to for anyone who wants to find there IPA. I give this one to friends who may not know what an IPA is or what it may taste like. Don’t have many friends like that anymore but.. Bitter up front and lingers a little but has a little sweetness to balance it out.
