Commercial Description:
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

12oz Bottle $8.69 6-Pack Coffee Grounds, Eau Claire Finest Kind IPA pours a hazy golden with tiny floating sediment. Gives an orange hue when held to the light. A two finger creamy white head formed on the pour and held strong. Leaves some chunky lacing. Interesting aroma. Starts off with a solid backbone of caramel maltiness before giving way to a sugary sweetness. Hops come through toward the backend in the form of orange peel and welcoming florals. A little on the faint side but makes my mouth water. Tastes much like the aroma. Caramel and biscuity malts lead the way into a orange candy like hoppiness mid-palate. Floral and grassy hops come along on the long finish. A sharp bitterness on the swallow quickly fades to a moderate lingering bitterness. Medium bodied and easy on the palate. Lighter on the carbonation than most IPAs I’m familiar with. Light airy mouthfeel. Lingering bitterness on the swallow. Good easy drinking IPA from Smuttynose. Refreshing with a solid, although unexpected from the aroma, hoppy bitterness. My first sampling from the brewers at Smuttynose. Too bad their offerings aren’t available in my area. I would like to try them all. 10/4/07

GBBF ’07. Cloudy golden / amber colour. Aroma pine / citrus. Taste is not as hoppy as first thought it would be but also has citrus balanced well with malts. This is a beer that you could definitely drink a lot of.

Not a very hoppy IPA. Amber with fast disappearing head. Drinkable in quantities.

In the past, I’d convinced myself that I didn’t like IPA’s, but I realize now that that was because I hadn’t drunk a good one. This is a very fine ale. It has a pleasant, hoppy aroma. It pours a pure white head. It is a pale amber color, and a bit cloudy. The scale tips on the side of hoppiness, with a complex mixture of both citrusy and bitter hops, with the bitter predominating just a bit. Overall, very drinkable. Another fine beer from Smuttynose.

Pours a fairly clouded amber. Hoppy nose with pine attributes. Flavor profile carries the same with a strong citrus and pine character that is strong, but not a complete hop bomb. Overall very drinkable and smooth. Even as well. You can’t really ask for much else than what you get.

Golden color with a white head, it has a nice lace. It has a swet taste of both malt and hops, with a certain dryness. It was very pleasant to drink and had a very nice aftertaste.
