Commercial Description:
Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

From tap@Beer Temple, Amsterdam. A fine-laced offwhite head upon a brilliant, deep gold colored body. Strong hop nose; evergreen and spices, citrus peel and resin. Dry pale malts in the background. Taste is very hoppy, but not overdone. Pine forrest, citrus, grass and resin. Almost balanced by a restrained, dry malt body. Supercrisp in the mouth. Mid-bodied. Faint malty, lasting hop bitter ending. Not fully balanced, yet a crisp and quenching IPA.

Bottle, thanks to Secret Santa. Pours a slightly hazy gold color with a small white head that lasts a good while. Aroma reminds me of Sierra Nevada’s Harvest or Torpedo, with that dank pesto and olive oil, as well as earth, leaves, grass, and toast. Tastes similar with plenty of earthy, leafy and slightly spicy hops against a toasted malt background with a slight caramel touch. Finishes like burnt wood and pesto with a touch of ashiness. Medium bodied and pretty creamy mouthfeel. I think Sierra Nevada does this sort of beer a bit better, but I’m a sucker for a beer that oddly makes me think of pasta.

12 oz. Bottle. I am a fan of IPA’s but this one just did not do it for me. The aroma threw it off for me and this carried over into the flavor. Smelled a bit old and funky. Poured a nice color though. With decent head. Not a bad IPA but definetly not a good one.

Wow, I am delighted and surprised by the smell of this IPA. It is slightly funky (perhaps like a pale of water that has been left in the cellar for a couple months and smells funny) combined with very citrusy hop aroma (as the description indicates). Its a pleasure, and has character. a bit soapy smelling too. By the way, this pours a cloudy honey with thin mayonnaise colored head. The tasty is nice and refreshing citrusy hops, with a bitter bite at the end that does not overstay its welcome like some IPA’s do. Combine this with a neutral light malt sweetness in both the smell and taste. Overall Impressions: I think the IPA style is finally starting to grow in me. I used to drink it for purely experimental/academic purposes.

Hazy orange pour with little hire frothy head. Great lacing. Pine dominates aroma with just a hint of honey and lavendar. No sweetness on the palate whatsoever and a nice clean bitter finish. Pretty hoppy single ipa that I’d drink again.

12oz bottle. Pours a slightly hazy deep gold color with a thick soapy head and decent lacing. Has a strong hop aroma along with some citrus and pine. A hops dominated flavor with an hint of citrus and a nice bitter finsh. A fine IPA with a well balanced hop presence.

Clear amber color with a medium head. Aroma of oranges and dust. Light malt flavor. A little more than moderate bitterness. Slightly grassy.
