| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 15, 2007 Bomber. Bronze with a big tan head. Nice lace. Nose is lots of sweet, caramelly malt with a bit of fruit and light, earthy hops. Well carbonated. Not quite as sweet as many maibocks, which is good IMO, sweet honey and caramel malt, just a touch sticky, but the stickiness does not detract. Smooth, lightly sweet finish, just a bit of earthy hop bite. Nice stuff. jeffc666 (1897), Fairfax, Virginia, USA

Nice complex sweet malt nose. The flavor is very nice, complex maltiness, spicy, earthy, sweet, all that! Hops are very subdued. The palate is divine, medium-full and lively. What a nice beer. These Smutynose guys continue to impress. emacgee (1892), Chapel Hill, North Carolina, USA

The nose is nice and hoppy, sweet, earthy, malty, caramel, lagering shows in the nose. The flavor has a nice hop bite to it, a little citrusy, earthy, malty, sweet, caramel. Nice biting palate with a refreshing carbonation. Easily the best maibock I’ve ever had. Beerdedone (1888), Croydon, Pennsylvania, USA

Clear red-amber with a creamy quarter-inch of lasting foam. Sweet grain, peach, caramel, and a hint of toasted nut on the nose. Same flavors with just enough spicy-grassy hop on the finish. Medium body is smooth, lightly tingly and sticky. CharlesDarwin (1867), Point Judith, Rhode Island, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 12/20 | Nov 24, 2009 22oz Bottle. Aroma is subtle, with a waft of honeyed cereal and some alcohol. Pours a fuming, brilliant orange-gold, with plenty of lacy and foamy off-white head. Flavor bounces around the room, with hot alcohols, somewhat icky yeast byproducts, a lot of sugar and some hop flavor. Jumbled. Body is a good bit too sticky and for me, the alcohols are much too forward. Way too boozy. Bitterness comes in a form that’s a bit metallic and somehow not well accounted for. A little sloppy, overall, lacking the crisp lagering quality I look for this style.
