Nose of apricot, orange peel, lemon grass, overall citrus, caramel malt, and yeast. Flavor was much the same- with molasses and caramel evident from the residual sugar. Nice lingering spicy hop bite. mouthfeel was rich and smooth- surprisingly so for a beer this light. Lots of flavor packed into an excellently balanced package- definite winner. Aroma of hops, apples, and honey. Very refreshing beer with a nice combination of sweet and tart with a noticeable but not overpowering hop finish. Tastes like Spring. Very nice beer! | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 22, 2002 Bottled (bomber). Dark bronze body, mostly transparent, with huge foamy tan slow-diminishing head. Promising. Nose is loaded, I mean loaded with caramel malt, and malted milk as well. Flavor again super sweet/malty; those looking for hops in their bocks had best avoid. Finish extremely smooth, perhaps a bit too much; but overall this is a great sweet, full-bodied maibock. Makes me miss Ayinger just a little less... jah noth (1020), Rochester, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Dec 19, 2003 Sweet caramel malt aroma, very little head. Sweet malt flavor with a fruity twang and hoppy undertones at the finish. This beer is 100% maibock! Very sweet and a not a session beer IMO but very good. Smuttynose is one quality brewer. Many thanks to Goz for this gem. whaleman (2171), North Wales, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 11, 2007 Somewhat viscous golden body with moderate carbonation and a robust, dense white head. Yeasty sourdough aroma with light citric, melon, and peanut qualities, plus clean perfumy highlights. Smooth and pleasant malty flavor with good relative depth. Includes some nice spice and floral characters as well. Medium sweet with nice balancing, natural bitterness. Overall this has an interesting blend of heat, yeasty phenols, and hop flavor and bittering compounds and is nicely rounded and fairly complex. Doesn’t stray into malt liquor territory like some maibocks do. This is the best maibock I’ve had so far.
